How A Free Claude Video Skill Replaced My Video Editor

A free Claude video skill replaced my video editor. It is not even close.

For three years I paid an editor $800 per ad and waited five days for each turnaround. Last month I deleted his contract from my contacts. The Claude video skill I am about to walk you through now ships my product demos, social ads, and explainers in about five minutes each. No watermarks, no monthly subscription, no editor tagging me on Slack to ask what font I want.

This is Day 6 of Skills Black Magic, and the skill is built on top of Remotion, a React framework that lets you describe a video in plain English inside Claude Code and watch the system build the full MP4 in real time. Animations, sound design, transitions, on-brand fonts, motion graphics, all of it. You will see the cost math, the install process, the prompt patterns I use, and the exact moments where this skill beats a human editor flat.

What I Used to Believe About Video Production

For most of my agency life I believed three things about video. One, that quality scales with budget. Two, that you cannot get cinematic polish out of a tool you did not pay for. Three, that the bottleneck on content was always the editor, never the ideas.

I was late to this, and the data says most people were not. HubSpot’s State of Marketing reports 75% of marketers already use AI for media production and 80% for content creation. I held out because I assumed the output would look like it was made by a machine. That assumption cost me six months of paying an editor for work I could have run myself.

I built my whole content stack around those three beliefs. I had a Slack channel called edit-pipeline with two paid editors, a junior assistant, and a Notion board with 47 columns. Every campaign needed at least a week of lead time. The cost per finished ad was $800 minimum. The cost per launch video was $2,400. The cost per explainer for a client was $3,500. When I added up a year of video spend I had burned through $46,000 just to get my own content out the door, before I even count what clients were paying me to coordinate the same chaos for them.

And the worst part was not the money. The worst part was the lag. I would have a real-time idea on a Tuesday, brief it on Wednesday, see a first draft on Friday, leave feedback over the weekend, get the revised cut by next Tuesday, post on Wednesday. The conversation in the market had already moved on. I was forever shipping last week’s reaction to this week’s news cycle.

Martin’s Track Record: 1,500+ automations built since 2019. Fortune 500 clients across SaaS, ecommerce, and financial services. I run a content engine that ships 30+ videos per week across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and X without a single human editor on payroll.

So when a friend showed me Remotion six months ago, I did what most jaded operators do. I rolled my eyes. Another “no-code video tool”. I had been burned by Synthesia, Pictory, InVideo, Lumen5, you name it. Every one of them had the same fingerprint: stock-footage soup, robotic voiceovers, that obvious AI motion that screams “this was made in 4 minutes by a software”. I assumed Remotion was more of the same and I let it sit in a tab for two weeks before I finally opened it.

I was wrong about Remotion. I was even more wrong about what happens when you wire Remotion into Claude Code as a skill.

What Actually Changed With The Claude Video Skill

Here is the simple version. Remotion is a React library. It lets you describe a video as a tree of components, a hero card, a chart, a product shot, a fade, a music bed, and renders the whole tree to a polished MP4. The expressive ceiling is unreal. People have shipped TV commercials and Netflix-quality intros with it.

But Remotion on its own is still a coding problem. You need to know React. You need to wire up the timeline. You need to manage the assets. That is the wall most operators hit, and that is the wall the Claude video skill removes entirely.

Once the skill is installed, you open Claude Code in your project folder and you type something like:

“Build me a 30-second product demo for our membership site. Open with the problem in bold white text on a dark background, then cut to a screen recording of the dashboard with arrows pointing at the key features, then end with a CTA card in our brand purple. Add upbeat background music and subtle whoosh transitions.”

Claude reads the prompt, plans the scenes, writes the Remotion components, picks the font weights, times the cuts, drops in royalty-free music, and renders the MP4. You watch the whole thing happen in the editor. About five minutes later you have a polished video on disk. If you want a change, you tell Claude what to change. It rewrites the relevant component and re-renders. No file you have to learn, no timeline to drag, no plugin to install.

Here is what this Claude video skill actually does under the hood:

  • Scene planning from plain English. You describe the video, the skill turns it into a structured shot list with timing, then writes Remotion components for each scene.
  • Brand-consistent typography and color. The skill reads your brand kit (fonts, hex codes, logo) from a single config file and applies it to every render, so every video looks like it came from the same studio.
  • Motion graphics out of the box. Spring animations, kinetic typography, lower thirds, callouts, charts, slide transitions, all generated as React code you can edit.
  • Sound design baked in. Background music from a curated royalty-free library, automatic ducking under voiceover, whooshes and impacts timed to your cuts.
  • Voiceover ready. Drop in an MP3 from any TTS provider and the skill aligns text overlays to the audio waveform.
  • Real-time preview in your browser. While Claude is building, you watch the timeline render frame by frame. You can pause, scrub, and request changes in plain English.
  • One-command export. When you are happy, the skill renders the final MP4 in the resolution you want: 1080p, 4K, 1:1 for Instagram, 9:16 for Reels, 16:9 for YouTube.

The cost of every one of those features used to be a human, or a subscription, or both. Now it is the cost of running Claude Code on your laptop, which for most of us is already part of the workflow.

The Five-Minute Setup You Run Once

The whole reason I trust this Claude video skill enough to put it in production is the install. It is genuinely five minutes. Not “five minutes if you already know Node”. Five minutes if you have never opened a terminal before. Here is the path I take every time I set this up on a new machine.

Step one. Install Node.js 20 or newer. Mac users can run brew install node. Windows users grab the installer from nodejs.org. Linux users use their package manager.

Step two. Open the terminal in the folder where you want the video project to live. Run npx create-video@latest and pick the “Hello World” template. This scaffolds a Remotion project with everything wired.

Step three. Open the folder in Claude Code. The skill ships with a CLAUDE.md file that teaches Claude exactly how Remotion works, where to put components, what fonts to use, how to render. You do not write this file. The skill installs it.

Step four. Drop your brand kit in brand.config.ts. Three things: primary font URL, brand hex codes, logo path. Done. Every video Claude builds from now on uses these values automatically.

Step five. Type the first prompt. “Make me a 15-second teaser for my upcoming launch.” Watch the magic. The first render takes about six minutes because Claude is also installing the audio library. Every render after that takes around three to five.

And that is it. No subscription. No watermark. No upload limit. The whole thing runs on your laptop. The only ongoing cost is whatever Claude usage you already pay for, and I have been on the same plan since I started.

The Real Numbers: Editor Versus Claude Video Skill

I tracked this for 30 days. Same content briefs, same brand, same posting calendar. Old workflow used my editor and my agency stack. New workflow used only the Claude video skill. Here is what the comparison actually looks like in spreadsheet form.

FactorPaying a video editorClaude video skill
Cost per video$800 average ($300 lowest, $2,400 for explainers)$0 marginal cost, runs on your Claude plan
Turnaround time3 to 5 business days per video5 minutes per video, including revisions
Revision speed24 to 48 hours per round of changesLess than 60 seconds per change
Creative controlFiltered through editor’s taste, often a battleYou describe it, Claude builds it, you adjust in plain English
Brand consistencyDrifts every project, requires style guide policingLocked into config file, identical on every render
Asset ownershipEditor owns the project files, you get the MP4You own all source code and assets, full repo on your machine
ScalabilityHire more editors to scale, costs scale linearlyOpen more Claude sessions, costs stay flat
Quality ceilingLimited by your editor’s skill, peaks earlyLimited by Remotion (Netflix-grade), keeps climbing
Lead time on trendsAlways one week behind the news cycleSame-day publishing on any moment that matters
Format flexibilityEach new aspect ratio is a separate quoteOne prompt change, instant re-render in any ratio

Read that last row again. One prompt change, instant re-render in any ratio. That single capability changed how I post. I used to make one video for YouTube and let Reels and TikTok get an awkward cropped version. Now I prompt for 16:9, 9:16, and 1:1 in one sitting and publish three native-format videos in under fifteen minutes. The reach multiplier is real.

And the monthly math is the part that made me cancel the editor for good. In 30 days I shipped 47 videos using the Claude video skill. At the old rate, that would have been $37,600 of editing spend. At the new rate, that was $0 of marginal cost on top of my normal Claude usage. The freed cash went into ads and into hiring an actual strategist instead of someone to render the same 47 motion-graphics templates over and over.

Watch The Reel I Made With This Skill

The reel below was made end to end with the Claude video skill. No editor, no After Effects, no Premiere. Prompt to MP4 in under six minutes. Watch the way the text overlays pop, the way the motion is timed to the beat, the way the brand stays locked. That is what a free Claude skill produces on a Tuesday afternoon.

Day 6 Skills Black Magic reel: built entirely with the Claude video skill.

Prompt Patterns That Actually Work

The skill is only as good as the prompts you give it. After 47 videos I have a handful of patterns that consistently produce agency-grade output. Here are the three I lean on every week.

Pattern one: the shot list. Instead of “make me a 30-second ad about X”, I describe the video as a numbered shot list. “Shot 1, three seconds, bold white text on black saying ‘X is broken’. Shot 2, four seconds, screen recording with red circle annotation pointing at the broken part. Shot 3, six seconds, our brand purple background with three bullet points sliding in. Shot 4, four seconds, CTA card with logo and URL.” Claude treats each shot as its own component and the result is dramatically tighter than open-ended prompts.

Pattern two: the reference video. I keep a folder of reels I respect, Tim Koda, Alex Hormozi, Justin Welsh, and I tell Claude “match the pacing of this style: cuts every 2 seconds, kinetic typography on every line, sound design on every cut.” Claude will not copy a specific video, but it will absolutely match a style description. This is how I avoid the “AI motion” tell.

Pattern three: the iteration loop. I never accept the first render. I always say “render this”, watch it, then send back three to five specific changes. “Slow the text fade on shot 2 by 200 milliseconds. Make the CTA card centered instead of left-aligned. Drop the music volume by 30 percent under shot 3.” Each change takes Claude about 20 seconds. By the third loop the video is dialed in.

The pattern under all three is the same: treat the skill like a junior editor with infinite patience. Be specific. Give feedback in seconds, not days. The compounding speed is what makes the output feel professional.

The Three Mistakes That Made Me Wait Six Months Before Trying This

I want to save you the six months I lost. Here are the three reasons I dragged my feet on the Claude video skill, and why every one of them turned out to be wrong.

Mistake one: assuming AI video means stock footage. Every tool I had tried before Remotion built videos by grabbing stock clips and stitching them together. The result always looked the same. I assumed this skill was more of the same. It is not. Remotion generates the visuals from code. There is no stock-footage library being mixed and matched. Every frame is rendered fresh from your prompt. That is why the output looks original.

Mistake two: assuming I would need to learn React. Remotion is a React framework, so I assumed I would have to learn React to use it. I do not know React. I do not want to know React. Turns out you do not need to. The Claude video skill writes all the React for you. You read it if you want, ignore it if you do not. The interface you actually touch is a prompt and a preview window.

Mistake three: assuming “free” means “limited”. The skill is free because Remotion is open source and the skill itself is a CLAUDE.md file plus a few helper scripts. The only thing I pay for is Claude usage, which I was paying for anyway. There is no metered render, no watermark, no resolution cap. I render 4K MP4s in 60 frames per second and the only cost is the disk space they take up.

Where The Claude Video Skill Beats A Human Editor, And Where It Does Not

Let me be honest about the trade-off. The Claude video skill is not a perfect substitute for a senior editor in every situation. It is a perfect substitute for the situations 90 percent of operators actually face. Here is the line I have drawn after two months of using it in production.

Where it beats a human editor flat: short-form social video, product demos, explainers, ad creative, kinetic typography reels, dashboard walkthroughs, app onboarding videos, course intros, podcast clip highlights, sponsor reads, ad variations, and any video where the visual idea fits into a 3-to-5 word prompt. For all of these, the Claude video skill is faster, cheaper, and often higher quality because there is no editor handoff to lose information.

Where a human editor still wins: long-form documentary editing, complex narrative storytelling, music videos with intricate visual sync, anything that needs original cinematography decisions on raw footage. If you are editing a 45-minute documentary with 200 hours of raw footage, you still want a human with good taste. The Claude video skill is not the right tool for that yet.

For everything I actually post day to day, and for everything 99 percent of solopreneurs and small business owners need, the Claude video skill is the right tool. The agency model of “pay an editor by the hour” is dead for short-form output. The math no longer makes sense.

The Hidden Win: You Own The Production Pipeline Forever

Here is the part that surprised me most. When you build with the Claude video skill, you end up with a folder of React components on your machine. Every video you have ever made is reproducible. If you want to update your logo across all 47 of last month’s videos, you change one line in brand.config.ts and re-render the whole library overnight. Try doing that with a human editor.

The compounding part is not the money saved on any one video. It is the app count. Asana’s Anatomy of Work found knowledge workers touch 10 different apps a day and lose 62% of the workday to repetitive tasks. Collapsing editing, captions and export into one skill removes three of those apps and the handoffs between them. I show the finished output on my growth hacking walkthrough and post the build notes to my Substack.

If you want to launch in a new language, you swap the text strings and re-render. If you want to test a new CTA across all your ads, you change the CTA component and re-render. The production pipeline is no longer a person you have to renegotiate with. It is code you own and can modify forever.

This compounds. Every video I make adds to my component library. The next video is faster because I am reusing tested components. By month three of using the skill, my time per video had dropped from five minutes to under two, because I was just composing existing pieces instead of generating fresh ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Claude video skill really free?

Yes. The skill itself is a CLAUDE.md file and a few helper scripts. Remotion is open source. The only cost is whatever Claude plan you are already on. There is no per-video charge, no watermark, no resolution cap, no upload limit.

Do I need to know React or coding to use this video skill?

No. The skill writes all the React for you. You interact through a prompt and a real-time preview. If you can describe a video in English, you can build a video with this skill. The only setup step that touches the terminal is the one-time install, which is five commands.

What kind of videos can I actually make with the Claude video skill?

Product demos, social ads, explainers, kinetic typography reels, course intros, dashboard walkthroughs, app onboarding videos, podcast clip highlights, sponsor reads, ad variations, and animated infographics. Basically any short-form video where the visual idea fits into a few sentences.

How long does each video take to render?

About five minutes for a typical 30-second video. Revisions are under 60 seconds because Claude only re-renders the components you changed. The first render after a fresh install takes about six minutes because the skill is also installing the audio library.

Can I match my brand colors, fonts, and logo with this Claude video skill?

Yes. The skill reads a brand.config.ts file with your primary font URL, brand hex codes, and logo path. Every render uses these values automatically, so every video stays on-brand. If you change the config later, you can re-render every video in your library overnight.

Will my videos look obviously AI-generated?

No, because the skill is not generating frames with AI. Remotion is rendering React components to MP4. The look is identical to what a designer would build in After Effects, because the underlying engine is the same kind of motion-graphics framework. There is no stock-footage soup and no robotic voiceover.
