Today I am going to give you my take on freelancing. There are various reasons why, I don't (and will never ever) go into freelancing and you can discover them in this episode.

When I travel and when I explain what I what I do. Some people are telling me I’m thinking about working online. And I would like to do this. I like to do that. And I think I should be a freelancer. What do you think about freelancing?

So for freelancing, it depends on the people. It's actually very good for some people, but it's not good for me. Maybe my reasons will be enough for to say, you know what? Maybe it's not the best solution for me either. I'm not trying to convince anybody. I'm just trying to explain why I am not doing any freelancing or anything like that.

One of the main problems that have is that when you're an employee in a company. Let's say you're doing sales. Or even if you're in accounting or if you're in marketing or something. You need to picture in your mind that what you're doing, regardless of the task that you're actually providing for the company, you are exchanging your time for money.

So the company wants you to be there eight hours a day and they're going to pay you based on the hours that you spend there. If you don't go to work, what happens? Well, then you're not paid. It's one of the biggest misconceptions that people have. Indeed, you're performing a task called marketing or sales or accounting or something. But in essence, you're exchanging your time for money.

But here's the thing. How many hours do you have in a day? Well, compared to Bill Gates and compared to Jeff Bezos, you have 24 hours. Everybody has 24 hours during the day. Right. And well, you need to sleep. You need to eat. You need to have a little bit of free time and all that stuff. So maybe you have a good 12 hours that you can actually dedicate to work and stuff.

So that means that whatever you earn is always going to be capped. There is a cap on it because you can't have more than 24 hours a day. So regardless how much you're charging per hour. So your revenue is capped. Because it's physically impossible to have more hours unless you decide not to sleep.

And this is one reason why it just doesn't work for me. I don't want to do that. I don't want to exchange my time for money. What I want is to have something that runs and doesn't require my time. And that makes money regardless if I'm working or not. Right. So that's the reason why freelancing is not for me.

OK, so second thing I know about freelancing, I mean, there are good things about freelancing. I'm not saying it's bad or something. I'm giving you the reasons why I am not going to do any freelancing and what I've realized. Most of the time when people are freelancing you spend way more time doing stuff that you don't like.

Which is not your specialty. And stuff you suck at instead of doing what you're actually passionate about and what you like to do. If you're a web designer, how much time do you actually spend designing? And how much time do you actually spend looking for clients?

Which is not what you like to do because you're not a salesperson. You hate that stuff. You suck at it. But you know, what happens is that while 90 percent of your time is dedicated to doing that stuff and it just the reality for a lot of freelancers, because this is something they need to do.

You have to put in some effort and some advertising and all that stuff for people to find you. Right. And, you know, a lot of freelancers when you're starting and stuff don't have that much spare money to go and invest in promoting stuff and it's really hard. This leads me to my next point.

People have the wrong impression about freelancing. Now, all of a sudden, you are the one responsible for bringing in the clients, for drafting the contracts, for cleaning the desks and the toilet and everything. And the problem is that your revenue is not predictable.

There is no consistency most of the time. Some people have systems in place where it's consistent. But the consistency is the biggest problem. You can have a contract where you're going to make three grand or something. And then for the next six months, you don't have anything, because people have to find you and you're not good at finding clients and stuff, it takes you all your time and you're not good at that kind of stuff.

So, you know, if you ask me, it's very stressful because when you have no idea when your next contract is going to be, I think it's a pretty stressful situation because you don't know how long you have to survive on the last money you earned. I just like peace of mind. I like something that's kind of predictable and that's automated.
