For todayโs episode, I saw this quote that I really like and that's actually really true.
So the coach says only worry about your character and don't worry about your reputation. Because your character is who you are. Your reputation is what people think of you.
OK, so this is actually really deep because, you know, again, if we circle back to I think it was last episode, actually, what I always tell you, I'm telling you that we spend too much time worrying about what other people think and stuff.
Well, some people might have some image of you, but is that really accurate. They've seen you for like three seconds. They don't know you, they heard some, you know, he said she said or something, and they will form some opinion on you and that's your reputation.
So very often your reputation may be very close to who you are, right. If you're true to your word it will be kind of close. But yeah, just know this. You know, it's a good example.
Maybe you've been through that kind of situation where someone heard stuff about you and stuff like that. You're like, oh man, I thought you were jerk, but you're actually a nice person, because they spoke to Bob and you had a run in with Bob for some reason or Bob just doesn't like you.
And so Bob is bad mouthing you everywhere. And we've all had that. Right. I've had that where I mean, there are some people, you know, as much as I don't like to judge people, I had preconceived ideas about some people. And then I realized, oh, that person's actually quite cool.
And it's not at all what I heard, what I heard through the grapevine, you know. So what really matters is if you have a bad rep and people think you're an idiot and you're a jerk, nobody likes that, right. So, you know, and again, you shouldn't care too much.

But it's easy to say that, right. If you come into a room and everybody thinks that you are the biggest jerk and you've done this and you've done that, itโs hard not to be affected by that kind of stuff.
But understand this. That's your reputation. What really matters is your character, like who you really are. And I mean a lot of people don't know who you really are.
There are some people that you might have seen once or twice and you just don't know them. So you remember I told you my friend was coming from France. He was here. I heard stuff about him before because there was this incident or something like that. And we actually never talked or anything.
So I had some preconceived idea of the guy. It was completely false. And then we started talking. I saw that this guy is a lot like me. We have a lot in common.
So the discrepancy between your reputation and character, I can be quite big. OK, and again, what really matters, as much as it sucks, if you have a good reputation, then obviously you're going to be happy about it. But if you have a bad reputation and stuff. Yeah, it kind of sucks. But don't get caught up in it.
What really matters is your character.
So it's very easy to forge a reputation and to build a reputation that's not you, but building character and being like a genuine person, true to yourself is what actually matters. And this is what's going to attract the right people to you and keep those people next to you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which matters more for long term success, your character or your reputation?
Character matters more because character builds reputation, but reputation cannot rebuild character once it cracks. Reputation is what strangers think after one interaction. Character is what your customers, partners, and team rely on across hundreds of decisions. Operators with strong character recover from one bad review. Operators with thin character collapse the moment pressure exposes them.
How do entrepreneurs protect their character while building a public reputation?
Operators protect character by refusing shortcuts even when nobody is watching. I write down three values I will not violate for revenue and review them quarterly. Those guardrails make hard decisions easy because the answer is already locked in. Reputation grows naturally when character is consistent, but reputation without character collapses the first time real pressure arrives.
Why is reputation easier to fake than character in business today?
Reputation today can be manufactured with paid press, social proof, and ghostwritten content in weeks, while character is built over years through small decisions nobody applauds. That is why audiences increasingly trust founders who share long form context. Polished reputation without depth feels suspicious now, because too many high reputation operators have been exposed in public crashes.
What habits build strong character in solopreneurs and online business owners?
Three habits build solopreneur character. Keep every promise you make to a customer, even small ones like reply times. Refund without arguing when someone is unhappy. Tell the uncomfortable truth in your content even when it costs you a sale. Run those three for two years and character becomes your most valuable asset, feeding reputation organically.

This was a very interesting and helpful episode, especially the part about building character rather than reputation. Thank you very much!
Wow! Character is who you are, reputation is what others think about you. BIG TRUTH
