We're going to talk today about the difference between work and progress. All right. Because there is a big difference that a lot of people don't actually get.
So why do we have such a hard time distinguishing work from progress? So when we are in the school system and more importantly the corporate system in some companies, you need to punch in some hours. So your boss doesn't care if after two hours, you've been able to finish whatever assignment you had, you would still have to be there until God knows what time.
And so we have a habit of staying at work and either work or pretend to work. Which is what a lot of people do. This is what the corporate system is like. You need to seem busy. You need to work on something regardless of what it is. Because you have to be here. So in a lot of people's minds just the fact that you're here and sitting at your desk working on something, is considered a good thing because this is what's being rewarded.
I just I don't get it. So you know in school it's the same thing. So you have to be at school at 8:00. All right. So what time do you have to get up? It's crazy. Thankfully I don't have to do that anymore. But anyway you have to be there between 8:00 and like 6:00 p.m. or something you know something crazy.
What happens if you finish like whatever you had to do? Well you have to stay in school. That's what it is. And this is why we're conditioned to see work like this. “This is good. I'm working on something right now”.
The difference is progress. So there is a very big difference between work and progress that we're seeing. Regardless of how many hours you spend working on something, like15 hours or something. If we're not making any progress, you lost your time! But the most important thing is progress. It's not just a matter of being busy and stuff.
I know a lot of people who will work far less than me and will make more progress. My buddy is very quick at executing stuff. He's a very good example for me of someone who's more efficient and is going for the progress whereas me sometimes I'm like “oh look at this and then I start looking into this and I'll look into that and then and at the end of the day, I'm like Oh man I spent 10 hours working on this thing. I could have worked an hour.
Progress Vs Work…What to focus on.
In my company for example, I don't care about work. I really don't care about work. So one of my guys who does all my web sites is super smart. I told him look this is what you have to do. All right. So this is your assignment. Then if you manage to do it in 10 minutes then that's your problem right. If it takes you seven hours do it or if it takes you 10 minutes it's not going to change anything on your salary.
And since they do this very intelligent stuff, I'm pretty sure he managed to automate some of that stuff. But do I care? I don't care! It's not about work. It's about the progress. If I can achieve the same result in 10 minutes instead of 10 hours, I will go for the 10 minutes. You know because I just want the business to move forward. You know one step forward. All right.
He automates a lot of stuff and I told him as well. Well you can work from anywhere on the planet. What do I care? I don't care. You know beyond that, you're happy. If you're working from the beach or whatever then you're happy my friend. The happier you are, the happier I am. And as long as we're making progress then then everybody's happy. All right.
And this is something you have to remember all the time. When you're working on something, try to prioritize the tasks that are actually going to help you make progress. You always have a lot of things on your to do list.
I do as well. Even though normally you should have one objective per day, you still have your own projects and ideas here and there. Right. But when you need to prioritize, just look for the tasks that are going to help you make progress.
