The real secret to ending up in rooms with people you used to only watch

You do not get into rooms with high-status people by asking to be let in. You get invited by being useful. I have shared spaces with people I once only watched on a screen, and it never happened because I chased them. It happened because I built something worth their attention first. Celebrities, big founders, the people everyone wants a photo with, are protected from takers and drawn to givers. So I flipped it. Instead of asking for their time, I looked for the one thing I could actually do for them, and I did it without a pitch attached. That is the whole secret. Value first, ask later, if ever. Running four companies from Bali across 49 countries put me near people I never expected to meet, and every connection started with me being helpful before I was interesting. Right now I was watching something and I thought it was really interesting and reminded me of something I went through and something I really want to discuss with you guys.

It actually raised a question that reminded me of what I was thinking back then and how my opinion on this has evolved. And I wanted to share that with you because that might actually be a question that you are asking yourself as well.

OK, so basically what happened in that show was that you had like these big stars, like movie stars and all that kind of stuff, athletes and everything, and they seem to only hang out with other celebrities. So you might have been wondering why are these celebrities only hanging out with other celebrities or is it some discrimination with little people and stuff?

OK, so I remember that back in the days when I was younger, I used to say, look, if one day I'm famous, I'm not going to hang around with other famous people. I really don't want to hang around these people. I will hang out with whoever I want to hang out with because for me, it looked forced.

So that had always been my approach in and I'm the type of guy who doesn’t really like staying with the elite and basically putting people in boxes and kind of like choosing that these people are not good enough for me or anything.

Not that this is what these people were thinking or something. It was just my interpretation. You tend to kind of like jump to conclusions and generalize very fast. So this is what I did, what I thought. Right.

And it's actually a behaviour that I've actually applied throughout my professional life as well. And I remember that, for example, my boss was telling me don't go have lunch with people in your team because blah, blah, blah.

I'm like, dude, honestly, I like these people, you know, I don't care what job they do or something. I like them. I'm not going to go and eat with some jerk just because he's senior manager or something. So when most of these guys were coming, I didn't go out because that was boring. I just didn't have anything in common with them.

One thing that I kind of like understood over time and you know, it's funny when you're younger and the adults tell you will understand eventually, you know, they sound like these really old dusty veterans and stuff. And you're like, oh, this is complete B.S. But it's true, you know, life and experience will teach you stuff.

And one thing that I that I understand now is the importance for anybody on this planet to be understood.

If you're a big movie star, do you go through a lot of things that most people cannot understand and these other stars, they've gone through the same drooling hours and repetitions and everything to master their craft.

They've been to crappy auditions. They were nobody. They did some roles that they didn't want to do. There is a lot of work that goes into that and most people don't understand, but if you find someone who's a star as well, they understand what you did to get there.

So when you see a star, you see the top of the iceberg, you see them. Oh, it's this big movie star and stuff like that. And people who are not stars and don't know anything about the subject are just looking up to the person at the top saying, oh, look, look at that person at the top.

But, you know, someone who's like you, someone has gone through the trenches and all that kind of stuff, they will look at how high that mountain is and they will they will tell you, dude, well, that's s an achievement.

OK, so and this is something that I didn't understand before when I was younger. And I feel bad about that now.
