The easy explanation is that it’s because of bad luck or because of a lack of commitment or any external circumstances.
But has it occurred to you that you are unable to reach your goals simply because you are going at it the wrong way?
Indeed, there is a crucial mistake that most people make when it comes to goal setting that sets them up for failure even before getting started.

I have compressed years of trials and errors, into easy to consume episodes, to take you from where you are now, to where you want to be.
I was chatting with my girlfriend and we were talking about goal setting. And it was really interesting and this is what I want to talk to you about today.
OK, so basically the concept is you're going to have a goal. And then the steps that you're going to take to get there and then how long before you reach the goal and all that kind of stuff. You need to have, like, medium term and long term goals and stuff, you know.
So my girlfriend, she had a few goals and she ended up with this big, massive list. The thing is that she has a hard time coping with some of the goals that she set because she's on track for some of them, but not others.
So we were talking and I was trying not to give a solution, which was I said, look, you want my opinion? OK, so here's the thing.
If you put too many goals and you don't do it the right way, then you're going to be overwhelmed. Right. And if you're overwhelmed, then it will cause paralysis. It becomes this huge, insurmountable task.
It's very easy if when people ask you to write down your goals and stuff, they don't give you the right instructions, then you can very well end up in that situation.
So I asked her, I said, look, do you look for any correlation between these goals? Or do you just have to go and write every single goal that you have and stuff? And she told me no.
Why everything you know about goal setting is wrong
And I was like, well, if you put it like this, it is overwhelming who's going to do that? Nobody is going to do that. But if you look for the correlation between all these goals, right. It will actually make things easier. All right.
I am a big fan of mind maps because they show you the correlation between elements. And it actually functions just like your brain will function. I guess that's how they’re developed.
So here in this case she wants to remodel the whole house and have a dream kitchen and stuff. And be able to increase the revenue of her company. So don't you think that some elements can trigger the other ones?
So if I manage to increase the revenue of my company, what does that mean? For me? It means that I have more disposable income. Then I can put in my kitchen and buy a new car and remodel the whole thing.
So instead of chasing five goals, because that's what people tell you to do, you just have to focus on the first one, which is to increase the revenue of the company from there.
If you look at things this way, it will make your life 100 times easier than having to chase your three hundred goals at the same time.
So if you guys have been writing your goals, are you actually linking those goals? Are you making some sort of mind map for this?

Goals Point The Direction, Systems Do The Walking
I wasted years worshipping goals. Write it down, visualize it, want it badly enough. None of it moved the needle, and I finally understood why. A goal is a direction, not a plan. Saying you want ten thousand a month tells you nothing about what to do on a random Tuesday. The people who actually get there do not think about the goal much at all. They build a system, a set of small repeatable actions they run whether they feel like it or not, and the results stack up almost as a side effect. The goal set the compass. The system did the miles.
So flip your focus. Instead of a bigger goal, design a smaller daily action you can run without motivation, then protect it like rent. That is the whole game. I explain the systems that carried my business further than any goal did on my Freedom by Choice podcast, and I write about it in more depth on my Substack. On why habits and systems outperform willpower, Harvard Business Review has the research, and McKinsey Digital shows the same pattern at company scale.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does traditional goal setting often fail solopreneurs?
Traditional goal setting fails because it lists outcomes without daily systems. A solopreneur who writes ‘earn 10K monthly' but lacks weekly content, outreach, or product cadence gets demoralized in ninety days. Goals without operating rhythms are wishes. Pair every annual outcome with a Monday-to-Friday execution loop that runs even on bad days.
What is a better alternative to SMART goals for entrepreneurs?
Identity-based goals beat SMART goals for solopreneurs. Instead of ‘launch a course in six months', commit to becoming a person who ships every Friday. Identity drives daily behavior. Behavior compounds into outcomes. The launch becomes a side effect of the identity, not a fragile target with one binary deadline.
How often should solopreneurs review their goals?
Solopreneurs should review goals weekly, not yearly. A weekly review of 30 minutes catches drift early, lets you re-prioritize against new market data, and keeps the next 7 days actionable. Annual reviews are too coarse for one-person operations where one mistaken focus week costs a meaningful percentage of yearly output.
What single shift most improves goal achievement for solopreneurs?
Replacing outcome goals with input goals. Instead of ‘100K subscribers', commit to ‘5 short videos per week for one year'. Inputs are fully under your control. Outputs depend on algorithms, timing, and luck. Solopreneurs who track inputs hit outputs faster because they stop blaming variables they cannot move.
