Ok you don't know where to start and what you should focus on…

There are contradictory versions of what you should do: Focus on one thing OR acquire many skills

Which one is better and which one is worse?

This is exactly what we are going to discuss in this episode and my answer might surprise you (I'm pretty sure it will actually)

I wanted to talk to you about a question that a lot of people ask, and you might be asking yourself this question. And you have heard the various answers and I had my own answer, but I heard one that was actually quite interesting.

The question is actually if it's better for you to specialize in something, or to be good at a lot of different things.

There is a saying, Jack of all trades, master of none. So you've heard that quite often. And people tell you, yeah, there is no way you can master everything. You focus on only one thing. This is how it's done and all that kind of stuff. OK, so I don't know what your opinion is on that.

If you specialized in something, you'll be very good at that one thing and that comes with its own set of advantages. But if it ends up being connected to something else that you absolutely don't know or something like that, it could be a problem.

So remember what I told you when I started working and the way I actually got to where I am today is that I started in the start-up, where you have to know a lot of things because you're doing a little bit of everything.

And then I moved to a corporate environment like a big corporation. And then in there, people were specialized and everyone is in their own box. That's all they do.

But this guy, I found his answer quite interesting. He basically answered that you should be a specialized generalist, which is pretty cool. It's one way of dodging bullets.

So what he means by this is you shouldn't be generalists in the sense that you're doing hundreds of things at the same time. What he recommends and what he said in the interview was that you need to kind of like combine skills.

That makes sense. OK, so don't go out and acquire like 15 skills at the same time. That will be kind of complicated indeed. But here in this case, you want to acquire some skills that make sense. OK, two skills that make sense. And so what do I mean by they make sense?

So they make sense because these are rare skills. So you want something that not everybody knows how to do it right, because otherwise nobody's going to pay you for it.

Should you hyper specialize or have many skills?

So that's the reason why I don't know someone who knows quantum physics or quantum mechanics or something like this will make more money than someone who needs to sweep the floor, you know what I mean?

Because anybody can learn that. Right. So that's the reason why people are paid more. So the first item is that it needs to be a rare skill and also it needs to be in demand, OK, for people to pay you money for that rare skill, then, you know, people need it.

There are some really rare skills that people have, that people are willing to pay good money for. Then find a 2nd skill that would be needed in conjunction with the first skill. Then you can offer both at the same time, saving the customer from having to find someone else to finish the job.

OK, so what I would suggest is you can combine two skills and if you have this, you definitely have an advantage over someone who hyper specialized and only knows one thing. OK, so I don't know if you are good at sales and good at customer support or something. This is a good combo.

When I say it makes sense, they need to be somehow connected. There needs to be some sort of logical connection.
