I have compressed years of trials and errors, into easy to consume episodes, to take you from where you are now, to where you want to be.
I want to talk to you about something. I just actually I just spoke to my girlfriend about it. So we are having a conversation. We're chatting because I mean right now she's not with me here. She's been stuck in Europe since the end of February. So we haven't seen each other in a while.
So we're talking and just discussing a few subjects and stuff. And she was kind of like hard on herself for a lack of discipline and focus in some areas of like her life or some areas of business and stuff like this, you know, not everything, but some things within business where she felt like she lacked the discipline.
And she realized that she needed to be more disciplined in those particular areas. So it was very interesting because, you know, at some point she kind of like convinced herself that she doesn't have it in her to have the discipline. And that discipline is something that you have or you don't.
It is not actually the case. And I want to basically take this opportunity today to help you guys, some of you guys who think that you don't have the discipline or you're trying to convince yourself that you don't have it and you use that as kind of like an excuse not to do anything.
People see everything in a one dimensional world where the world is multidimensional, OK?
And, you know, very often the problem and a side effect of, let's say, admiring someone and following someone is that you kind of forget that what they're doing is just one aspect of life and that if you don't have what they have, like that discipline that this person has, then you say I don't have it. I suck at it.
It's a big problem that a lot of people have. It will affect me as well sometimes, but I can snap out of it. OK, and here, let me explain why, if you're thinking that way, why you're wrong and you're dead wrong.
How to improve your self discipline
So some people think that I'm very, very driven, very disciplined and that kind of stuff because they see me in my in business, OK? So from a certain perspective, I will say yes. Well, I am, you know, and they tend to think that, oh man, he has it. I don't.
So let's say, for example, you might know this person. So you have a friend who has a diet, a specific diet like, I don't know, they're vegan or they're vegetarian or whatever, vegan.
And, you know, as disciplined as I am, I have these people in my life. Have you ever seen how thorough these people will be reading every freaking label in the supermarket? And if you ask me, dude, I don't have time for it. I don't have the motivation. I don't have the discipline to do this.
OK, does it mean that I don't have discipline at all? It doesn't. Right. Because as people said before, dude, Martin is the most disciplined guy I know. Look at how he's handling his business. But yeah. So if you understand my example, I'm disciplined in this specific field. But there are fields where I suck.
OK, so what I want to get to with this is exactly what I said. We will eventually find an excuse. I just told you, man, I don't have the discipline. I cannot read the labels.
Well, I could look at everything I do business wise because I'm interested in my business. And I will do things without people pushing me and stuff. And I will do things every day.
OK, so you just you're summarizing the world as you have it or you don't it doesn't work. We're just finding excuses to justify the fact. I don't want to do it. If these are just excuses, excuses that you are making, excuses that I am making, OK, because I'm making the same excuses here.
OK, so what should you do? OK, because you there are definitely areas of your life where you have a lot of discipline. If you find a way to be disciplined in one area, then you will use those same principles to do it in another area.
Because you've already done it. It doesn't matter what it is. When you're building a habit, for example, it doesn't really matter what the habit is. The only thing is that you have to find a way to just do it every day regardless what it is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do most people struggle to build self discipline?
Most people treat self discipline as a feeling instead of a system. They wait for motivation before acting. Self discipline actually comes from environment design, daily structure, and removing friction around the right behavior. Once the system is set, willpower stops being the bottleneck and discipline becomes the default.
How long does it take to build real self discipline?
Real self discipline takes about 60 to 90 days of consistent practice before it stops feeling like effort. The first 30 days are pure friction. Days 30 to 60 the new behavior becomes neutral. After day 60 the behavior runs on autopilot and skipping it actually feels uncomfortable.
What is the fastest way to improve self discipline?
Pick one keystone behavior, attach it to an existing daily trigger, and protect it for 30 days no matter what. A keystone behavior is a small action that pulls other good habits along with it. Examples: a 20 minute morning walk, one written page, or no phone before noon.
Can self discipline be trained or are some people born with it?
Self discipline is fully trainable and almost no one is born with it. People who appear naturally disciplined usually grew up in environments that rewarded delayed gratification early. The good news is that any adult can build the same neural pathways through repeated practice and consistent environment design.

Self Discipline Is A System You Build, Not A Trait You Are Born With
For years I believed disciplined people were simply wired differently, and that I had somehow missed out on that gene. It was a convenient excuse. What actually changed things was realizing discipline is not willpower you summon each morning, it is an environment you set up once so the right action becomes the easy one. When I removed the distractions, scheduled the hard work first, and made quitting harder than continuing, I suddenly looked disciplined. Nothing about me had changed except the system around me.
So stop waiting to feel motivated and start engineering your days so discipline is the path of least resistance. Cut the friction on what matters and add friction to what derails you. I go deep on the habits and systems that actually held for me on the Freedom by Choice podcast and in my own story. For the science, Harvard Business Review has covered how environment shapes behavior more than raw willpower, and HubSpot has written on building routines that survive a bad day.
