I have compressed years of trials and errors, into easy to consume episodes, to take you from where you are now, to where you want to be.
I wanted to talk to you about something that well, it's actually counterintuitive. And this might be some things that I told you not to do, but today I'm going to tell you to do it, OK? I'm talking about quitting.
Yes, quitting.
Well, you know, obviously the term quitting has a very bad connotation. Itโs usually a trait of character that you don't want in your life to define you. Oh, this person's a quitter and stuff. Right.
So, you know, because of this, we are always afraid of quitting something because it makes us look bad. But here's the thing.
Sometimes actually I recommend you quit. OK, so I'm going to give you a few examples and we're going to analyse that together.
Anyway, if you've been following me for some time, you'd know that at some point I was in a business venture that I liked in the beginning. But then afterwards it became a freaking nightmare. I hated every single second of it. I hated it, OK?
And so here's the thing. The thing is that I invested quite a lot of money in this venture, you know, some investments and shares in the company and everything. And a lot of people said but you have shares in company. You know, if you stop now, you lose everything.
I remember watching an interview of a guy who was one of the founders of Gojek. There is an app here in Indonesia called Gojek. And I mean, this thing does everything. So it's like Uber. And you can buy your electricity. They can go do your grocery shopping. They do everything. They bring massage therapist, they clean your house. It's ridiculous.
This guy had everything, you know, everything was going well for them, you know? Well, I mean, on the surface, I mean, they actually had a major crisis and he quit. He said, look, I can't do it anymore because it was too much for the guy. He was on God knows how many telegram groups, how many WhatsApp groups, support, blah, blah, blah.
His phone was ringing around the clock and it just wasn't what he wanted in life. And so he had a chat with his business partner. He said, look, I can't do that anymore. And then he was able to quit, I think, while he still has some equity and stuff in the company.

If you have ever been called a quitter you need to hear this
So this rang true with me. I now itโs still a small company and stuff, but I ended up in a situation where, I mean, this thing was killing me, man. I hated it. I absolutely hated it. And the argument that you could make is, oh, yeah, but what about the money? Right. If you stop now, the money is lost.
Well, here's the thing. I invested some money and every month I had to invest more and more money because the business was broken, OK? And so that meant that in order to keep the business alive, I just had to pump money out of my pockets and stuff.
So, yeah, well, if I left now, whatever I put in that business is gone. But if I stay, guess what? I'm going to lose more money every single month.
So this is a common excuse. Oh, I've come this far. I can stop now. Which in some cases works OK, but not always. There is not a set answer of oh well you've done it for quite some time, let's keep doing that. If you're doing something that's wrong, at some point you need to stop. Stop worrying about how long you've been doing it.
If there is a good reason, right, you make a decision, you have a process to make your decisions. And if that process says, look, you know, and youโve carefully studied it, look, it's best to stop the bleeding now instead of, like, bleed forever, you know?
I learned a great deal from that experience.
Quitting The Wrong Thing Is Not Failure, It Is Navigation
I was called a quitter more than once, and for a long time it stung, because I had absorbed the idea that winners never walk away. Then I watched people ride a doomed plan straight into the ground just to avoid the label, and I realized stubbornness dressed up as loyalty is not a virtue. I quit jobs, niches, and whole business models that were going nowhere, and every one of those exits freed the time and energy that eventually went into something that worked. Leaving a dead end is not weakness, it is direction.
So separate the two kinds of quitting, abandoning your goal versus abandoning a bad road to it, because the first is surrender and the second is just steering. The winners are not the ones who never quit, they are the ones who quit the right things fast. I talk about the things I walked away from and why on the Freedom by Choice podcast and in my own story. For the research, Harvard Business Review has covered when persistence turns into a trap, and McKinsey has studied how the best operators cut losing bets early.

What do the winners actually do?
They are not the ones who never quit. They are the ones who quit the right things fast, which frees the time and energy that eventually goes into something that works.
