In this podcast you will find all the support and answers you need to start, grow and scale a business that gives you the freedom you deserve.
I have compressed years of trials and errors, into easy to consume episodes, to take you from where you are now, to where you want to be.
I want to talk to you about, you know, one of the common mistakes that some people make.
So the thing is this. So there are some really smart people out there, OK? I know some people who are really, really smart. Itโs kind of like a vague concept. Some people say, oh, you're smart and you're not. But well, the intelligence of being smart is very subjective.
But I'm talking about the book smarts. You know, these people who know all the facts and all the tests and all that kind of stuff, and all the theory about everything. And the main problem is this is not a theory, OK?
And some people, like all the intellectuals, have ideas and stuff. You know, a lot of them are paid to formulate theories. OK, then, you know, at some point they will have to validate them or something.
But there are some people whose main occupation is to formulate those theories. And well, in our field, it's a problem because you're dealing with people, OK, and the theories of what people would do, how that will work and stuff, it's very, very hard to predict because, you know, people are unpredictable.
They will spend a lot of time thinking in their head about this concept, about this, about that, and always digging deeper and deeper and not necessarily acting. I have a natural tendency of doing this.
I have a buddy of mine who told me that because we were working on the project together. He told me, dude you like your theory, youโre like a detail oriented person and man, Iโm the complete opposite of this. For him I look like, you know, someone who wants to check all the boxes and stuff, which, you know, on that project, I am trying to foresee stuff that's going to happen later.
And this is my natural tendency to do those kinds of things. But, you know, I've gotten a lot better at this over the years.

Book Smart vs street smart? Who you got?
So basically what I'm saying, all the intellectuals and blah, blah, blah spend a lot of time thinking and formulating, you know, theories and stuff, you know, when I design a process without having tested the thing. Yet it's a theory. OK, so that's my natural tendency.
So the problem, again, as I said, is that in this field we have to deal with people. You have to deal with humans. There are some fields where being like intellectually book smart oriented will actually be beneficial for you, but this is not one of them.
You know, I told you, my buddy, to me, the guy was crazy. He was like, let's go for it and we'll see afterwards. I'm like, what? No, I mean, hell no. Because it's just not in my bones, not in my genes, you know?
OK, and so my point is that very often in this field here, the people who make it can look like a complete idiot, when I think I'm so smart and I didn't make it. Well, the difference is that this person, they just went for it, OK? They didn't have a plan with everything mapped out and stuff. They just went for it. OK, like my buddy, he goes for it.
So I'm not saying that everything he does is successful, just like anything. You know, he will fail at a lot of things, but he will fail fast. Whereas if you spent too much time planning and blah, blah, blah, you will fail, but you will fail very, very slowly.
And it doesn't give you all the actionable data that you can use to find out what works, you know. So, you know, very often, I mean, you see some of these guys and youโre like, man, this guy looks like a complete idiot man, but they just go for it.
Key Takeaways
Street smart entrepreneurs survive chaos. Book smart entrepreneurs scale clarity. You need both.
School teaches you to follow instructions. Business demands you write your own instructions in real time.
Real world reps beat textbook theory every single time in early stage entrepreneurship.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between book smart and street smart?
Book smart is theoretical knowledge from formal study. Street smart is practical knowledge from real world experience. Both have value, but they solve different kinds of problems.
Which is more important for entrepreneurs, book smart or street smart?
Street smart wins in early stage entrepreneurship because you face messy unpredictable problems that no textbook covers. Book smart becomes more valuable once you scale and need systems.
Can you be both book smart and street smart?
Yes, and that is the ideal combination. Book smart gives you frameworks. Street smart teaches you when to break those frameworks. The strongest entrepreneurs blend both.
How do solopreneurs build street smarts?
By doing reps in the real world. Launch products, talk to customers, run failed experiments, and learn from each one. Street smart cannot be downloaded from a course.
Is school enough to succeed in business?
No. School teaches you to follow instructions. Business demands you write your own instructions, often in conditions that are unclear or stressful. The two skill sets are not the same.
Books Give You The Map, The Street Teaches You The Terrain
I used to think reading enough would make me ready, and I collected knowledge the way some people collect excuses to not start. The truth I learned the hard way is that book smart tells you what should work, street smart tells you what actually does when the plan meets reality. Neither wins alone. The reader who never acts stays clever and broke, the doer who never learns keeps making the same expensive mistake in new clothes.
So use books to shorten the odds, then get into the arena fast enough to fail while it is still cheap. Read to prepare, act to learn, and let the street correct what the page could never teach you. I talk about what only real reps taught me on the Freedom by Choice podcast and in my own story. For the research, Harvard Business Review has covered why experiential learning sticks harder than theory, and McKinsey has studied how leaders actually build judgment on the job.
