Is your entourage leading you down the wrong path?

Today we are going to talk about the people around you. It's probably not what you think guys. We are going to cover a new topic that most of us completely overlook and that leads us to the wrong path without us realizing it.

If you want to know what this big mistake is, then tune it to today's podcast.

So the people you spend time with. We have already discussed this but no one ever talked about something else. Just a quick reminder of stuff we already discussed in the beginning. So I told you that when you're an entrepreneur, it's kind of complicated because it can't be very lonely.

Because you're doing everything by yourself. And spending time with other entrepreneurs is very beneficial for you because when you're talking to other people about what you do. People have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. But when you meet people who understand what you do and all the efforts and all the sacrifices and all the hustle, then it really helps. Spending time with people who understand this, people really like you. It is a godsend, right?

So one other thing we covered as well was, you know, I told you the five people you spend the most time with are going to have an incredible impact on your life. They're going to impact your behaviour. And people say that you're the average of the five people you spend the most time with.

And I advised you to find people who are actually motivating you and people who are where you want to be. Try to spend time with people who stimulate you intellectually or emotionally and stuff.

You don't want to find people who drag you down. That's not what you want. You want to move forward. So there are like three things you can do.

You can stagnate. You'll feel bad about yourself. The other one is you can go backwards, and that's even worse. But you can move forward. And this is what you should be doing every day. Baby steps, just move forward and make small changes every day. When you look at it after a few months or few years, you'll be pleased about your progress.

So you want to hang around with people like that. Like-minded people. But here's the kicker of today's podcast. Do you only want to hang around with like-minded people? People who think exactly like you?

I spend a lot of time by myself. And those five people you need to hang out with, it doesn't have to be in person. It could be trainings or following someone's videos. I created an environment where I was by myself doing my things, but also having all these mentors and other people who are good in areas where I'm not. So this was my Eco-System.

Is your entourage leading you down the wrong path?

And then what can happen is that you will create this environment where there is only one dimension of the truth or of the perception of life. That's not good. Nature is very good at finding a balance. And I told you there are always extremes.

If you only hang out with people who think the same, the way you think is not objective because people around you still have an influence on what you think.

That happened to me. I created this perfect universe where I didn't have to put up with a lot of crap. But instead of being friendlier, I created a universe where some of the things that other people do, I just couldn't stand it anymore.

That's what I want to avoid for you guys. If you're brought up in an environment where everybody thinks the glass is half empty, you'll see the glass half empty. If you don't have someone who tells you the glass is half full, you would never think that. And your chain of thought becomes unbalanced.

You don't have to agree on stuff. But at least understand where others are coming from. That keeps you grounded and makes you understand the fact that there are 7.5 billion possible opinions of something.

Key Insights

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Choose your circle deliberately, because it shapes your mindset, your ambition, and your trajectory.

The danger is not just negative people. It is echo chambers. Surrounding yourself only with people who think like you creates blind spots that silently limit your growth.

Seek people who are where you want to be, not just people who understand where you are. Aspiration requires consistent exposure to what is actually possible.

The people I had to walk away from to build anything

You become the average of the rooms you spend time in, and most people never audit the room. I had to. Some of the people closest to me were quietly certain I would fail, and their doubt was heavier than any competitor. Cutting that weight was the hardest business decision I ever made, and it came before I built a single company. I now run four of them from Bali, surrounded by people who assume the win is possible. On my story I am honest about who I had to distance myself from and what it cost me emotionally to do it. This is not just motivation talk. McKinsey has tracked how the networks around a founder shape the quality of the opportunities they even hear about. Guard your circle like it is part of your strategy, because it is. I dig into that on my YouTube growth hacking playlist, where I show how your environment sets the ceiling on your ambition. Gartner has documented the same effect inside teams: the people around a decision quietly bend it long before the vote. Choose that room on purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions About Your Social Circle and Entrepreneurial Success

Does it really matter who I spend time with as an entrepreneur?

Yes, and research consistently backs this up. The people you spend the most time with shape your beliefs, your habits, and your ambition. For entrepreneurs, this effect is amplified because building a business requires sustained motivation and unconventional thinking that is hard to maintain in an unsupportive environment.

What is the five people rule and does it actually work?

The five people rule states that you become the average of the five people you spend the most time with. While it is a simplification, the underlying principle holds. Exposure to people who are further along, more ambitious, or more disciplined than you raises your own baseline over time.

How do I build a social circle when I am just starting out as an entrepreneur?

Start with online communities, local meetups, and co-working spaces where founders gather. You do not need a large network. You need a handful of people who are genuinely building something and willing to exchange real ideas, not just surface-level encouragement.

What if my existing friends and family are not supportive of my business?

Most people who seem unsupportive are actually projecting their own fears onto you. They want you to be safe, which often means familiar. The solution is not to cut them off but to stop seeking entrepreneurial validation from people who have never been entrepreneurs.

Is it wrong to distance myself from people who drag me down?

It is not wrong, it is necessary. Protecting your mental environment is not selfishness. You can love people while limiting how much their fears influence your decisions. Healthy boundaries with negative influences are one of the most underrated productivity tools available.
