This is a really good quote, that's actually very representative of how most people act and a big problem that I see.

So let's say, for example, everybody wants things to change. And it's one of the traits of human you don't want to be in the same place. Right. So you always want things to change. So you can see it when you go there, like there is an election or something. But we want to change that. So you are going to change the president and stuff like that. And people are fighting for change.

And this is one of those things. If you ask anybody, do you want things to change? They'll tell you, yes, I want things to change because X, Y, Z and everybody has a reason why.

So you've heard about global warming and all the pollution and stuff like that. And everybody wants the situation to change. Right? So everybody says, yeah, we need some change because it's going to be irreversible. What about their kids and their kids? What kind of planet are we going to leave them and stuff like that?

Everybody agrees on the fact that, well, things need to change. But here's the thing. The thing is that when people think about change, they only talk about external change. So someone has to go and actually do that.

The quote said, well, who wants change and who wants to change?

One of the best lessons you will ever learn.

And that's the biggest problem that I see is in the environment section, for example, everybody wants the planet to be better. But are people changing their habits? And you need to understand something that it is very rare that changing something that will impact you positively is going to come from outside only.

Itโ€™s actually coming from you and not from some mystical power or some government or something, because for whatever reason, we've been accustomed to putting everything in the hands of others, like presidents or governments or whatever.

And the biggest change you can you can actually make is yourself. Everything you want is in yourself, you need to evolve as a person if you want stuff to happen, right. So the thing is everybody wants more money and stuff like that. Yeah. We want more money. Why does Bob have more money than me? And I want more money.

Well, but here's the thing. Maybe Bob is working five hours more than you do every single day. Do you want to do it? Well, no, people don't want to do it. They just want to sit in front of the TV and they want someone to change something for them.

If you want to achieve your goals and stuff like that, you'll have to operate those changes in the beginning. Who wants to do that? Nobody wants to do it in the beginning. And you have to force yourself to actually go and do it. Right.

But it will take you to where you want to go. Its part of the journey you need to do it. And then very, very quickly. Trust me, it's a pleasure. You're learning stuff. It's not work. Right.

So whatever it is that's challenging you right now and youโ€™re waiting for some change, something to happen, that's not the solution. This is the worst solution ever. The change has to come from within.

If you understand this, youโ€™re way, way above ninety nine percent of the population, who will only complain about someone else being responsible for their demise. Someone else being responsible for making their life better or to make any sort of change is always someone else who has to do it.

But if you understand this crucial fact that, dude, if I want some change, I need to change as a person and need to evolve, then you are going to achieve great things.

How I turn a hard lesson into a permanent rule

Most people learn the same painful lesson three or four times. The lesson fades in about six weeks because nothing anchors it. The skill worth having is not learning faster. It is making a lesson stick the first time, so you never pay for it twice. I have built four companies, and the compounding advantage came from lessons that turned into rules instead of regrets.

Here is the method. Write the lesson as one sentence. Post it where you actually make decisions, not in a journal you never reopen. Review it weekly for a quarter. The friction of writing and rereading is exactly what converts a one-time insight into an operating rule. I keep my running list of these on my Substack, and I talk through the hardest ones on the Freedom by Choice podcast.

This is not just discipline. The research on reflection and learning from Harvard Business Review shows that writing a lesson down measurably improves retention, and the founder guides at Stripe Atlas push the same habit of documenting what you learn. Take the last lesson that cost you. Write it in one sentence today.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is one of the most valuable lessons in entrepreneurship?

That the obstacle and the path are usually the same thing. The customer who will not buy is showing you the offer is wrong. The team member who quits is showing you the role was unclear. The market that will not respond is showing you the positioning is off. Resistance is data.

How do you turn business obstacles into actionable lessons?

Treat every block as a question instead of a verdict. Ask what the obstacle is rewarding and what it is punishing. The answers usually reveal a structural fix that is invisible while you are framing the block as bad luck. Three or four reframed obstacles per quarter produce most of the strategic learning.

Why do most entrepreneurs miss the lessons hidden in business setbacks?

Because the immediate pain pushes the brain into defense mode. The setback gets stored as a story about external forces instead of a feedback signal about internal choices. Founders who recover fast and learn slow stay in motion but never compound. The mix to aim for is fast recovery with deliberate reflection.

How do you make sure a hard business lesson actually changes your behavior?

Write the lesson in one sentence, post it where you make decisions, and review it weekly for the next quarter. Most founders learn lessons that fade in six weeks because they never anchored them. The friction of writing and reviewing is what turns a one-time insight into a permanent operating rule.
