I am working on my personal branding. I've never done that before. I've done branding so I know the formula about branding but I wasn't doing personal branding. You know I was always hiding behind the brands and nobody knew me. So now I’m working on my own Web site with my face and stuff on it.
And so yeah I’m building a website at the moment and I just finished doing the main map of the Web site. Hopefully I've finished. And Jesus Christ if you see the mind map, there are so many things to do its crazy. I forgot how many things you have to do for a website!
So I am facing this massive amount of work, so it would be better if I could show you the mind map because mind maps are pretty cool. I have friends of mine. They they've told me about my map since like I don't know eight years. That's all they use. So my personal evolution brought me to mind maps and now my brain works way better with my maps but it's absolutely ten times better than writing stuff on notes.
So on the website I will give you guys some resources of you know what I use every day to work, and my maps will be one of them. But this is absolutely awesome. You have so much clarity with a mind map that you don't have with the rest. So you see that everything is connected and stuff. It's awesome.
Anyway the subject of the podcast is burnouts. So I meet a lot of people here in Bali and they're like “oh you know what? I had a burnout and decided to leave for a year and ended up here” and blah blah blah. So I met so many people who told me that I'll do that burnout and stuff and it's actually very easy to get a burnout. You remember the quote that I told you?
We overestimate the number of things we can do in a week and we underestimate the number of things we can do in a year. OK. And the fact that we overestimate what we can do and we want to do everything like now today, we're basically always stressed about the next task that we need to do and stuff, and that's that will lead you to burnout.
So there are two things that you can implement right now that will make a big difference. OK. So the like burnout and stress and all that stuff. I thought it was only related to you. Most people will associate that with the amount of work you have to do like physically or operationally. Do they have too much work to do?
So you're basically counting the number of hours you're working and stuff. People forget about the mental burnout. Not that you're like concentrating on a specific task or whatever but it's just that in your mind you have something to do. So that creates unrest for you. OK.
So I had periods where I was going to bed every night at like 3:00 a.m. And why was I going to bed so late? Because I felt like oh gee I still have to do this I still have to do that and blah blah blah. And I only went to bed when like I was exhausted in my mind right. So these are the periods where you know I told you how I work.
So I run sprints right. I will run the sprint. I'm like well you know what. For like a week I'm going to build this new project that you know will take maybe a team of four or five people to build it in like a few months. And I build this by myself in like a few weeks. OK.
So during these few weeks yes I will work quite a lot and try to get a lot done at the same time. And yes I will end up sleeping like less and less. I'll go to bed at like 3:00 a.m. and stuff like that. You know what? I'm like really tired and then the next morning I wake up and I'll work and stuff like stuff like that. OK. But you know for me it's just temporary. I do that for like a week, and then I launch a project and stuff.
But the fact remains that during those periods my brain is never resting. Why? Because I always have something in the back of my mind that says Martin you haven't done this and you haven't done that you still need to do this and you still need to do that. OK. So even when you go to bed, you're not resting properly because whether you know it or not you're still thinking about the stuff that you need to do.
How To Remove Stress Quickly & Easily
So my answer to that was you know, tricking my own brain. OK. So you have to understand that a problem is only a problem in your brain. I'll give you an example. So let's say it's raining today. You want to go play basketball and it starts raining. Well the fact is that it rains. For you it's a big problem. Like “dude I wanted to play. That sucks I can't play”. But for the farmer next to you it's not a problem. It's a godsend right? Depending on the way you think about it. OK. It's not a problem per say.
So the reason why I'm saying that is because all these tasks that you have to do, they're not a problem. You make them a problem and I will give you another example. I bought some cryptocurrency. So maybe a lot of you guys are in cryptos as well. If you bought crypto currencies you know what I'm talking about.
So you have this app of your portfolio and you are refreshing the app every five seconds. “Oh man Bitcoin's going down! I should have bought yesterday!” It's like crazy. You refresh the damn page every five seconds and it feels like you know the fact that the currency is going down you feel like the world is going to end.
So a buddy of mine introduced me to it and then I was studying all that stuff about cryptos and everything. And the beginning of this year like very early January, everything went to hell! And basically I was refreshing the damn app like every five seconds and am like “Oh man it's going down”.
And then at some point I was like “you know what? Stop looking. It will come back up at some point. Stop looking at it”. And then I completely stopped looking at it. So I had my cryptos and I've only looked at them in I don't know like four months five months now. What is it doing today? Yeah. Five months.
So are they still going down? Maybe. But the fact is I'm not thinking about it. So it's not a problem. You see what I mean?
OK so it's the same thing with the task that you have in the back of your mind. So you're like “Oh man I need to do this and I need to do that” and blah blah blah. And if you keep thinking about it, that's when it becomes a problem. If you're like “you know what? Now I'm fine”, and you go to bed, then it's not a problem.
And that radically changes your dynamic, like your happiness levels your stress level and all your balance because you sleep better. So that's how you trick your brain. You say “look today this is what I have to do. I have this one main task that I have to do”. Once you have done this then you know that that's it, your day is good. You've done what you needed to do.
And with this simple thing, you can't even imagine how it will change your life because when you go to bed you know that you've done what you needed to do and the rest can wait until tomorrow. That stuff that was obsessing you yesterday that you need to do at like 2 a.m. or something.
It will just wait until tomorrow you go to bed and you sleep like a baby you have the peace of mind that I've been talking you know for the last couple of podcasts. That peace of mind is invaluable.
It's the most precious thing you can have. And using this very simple trick. You set one task that you have to do for the day and once this task is done then you've filled your contract. All right. And forget that you have time. You can do a lot of things in a year. Don't try to do everything now.
