Three things have changed since I recorded this, and one thing has not.

The tooling got cheaper and better. What took me a chain of four tools and a weekend now takes one afternoon. If you are starting today, build the lead list first and the product second. The list tells you what to make. I had that order backwards for years and it cost me two dead products.

The second change is competition on the output. When everyone can generate a document, the document stops being the moat. The moat is the specificity of the list you send it to. A mediocre template sent to 200 people who have the exact problem beats an excellent template sent to 5,000 who do not.

The third is that buyers now assume the first email is automated. So the fifth one has to sound like it is not. I write follow-ups one through four as sequences and number five by hand. That single manual email closes more than the four before it combined.

What has not changed is the maths. Zapier's state of business automation research found that 88 percent of small and medium businesses say automation is what lets them compete with larger companies, and 94 percent of employees perform repetitive, time-consuming tasks. That is the whole opportunity for a one-person business. You are not outworking a team. You are deleting the work the team would have done.
