The Perils of Being a Jack of All Trades
| Positioning Strategy | Best For | Implementation Time | Revenue Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Problem-Specific Expert | Consultants and service providers | 2-4 weeks | 2-5x price increase potential |
| Industry Vertical Focus | SaaS and digital products | 1-3 months | 30-50% higher conversion rates |
| Audience-First Positioning | Content creators and coaches | 1-2 months | Higher retention and referrals |
| Methodology-Based | Agencies and training companies | 3-6 months | Premium pricing + IP ownership |
| Anti-Positioning | Disruptors and newcomers | Immediate | Rapid attention, slower trust-build |

But without a clear focus, I struggled to attract high-end clients.
My income hit a plateau.
Once I got hyper-targeted with my positioning, everything changed.
I went from generalist to category dominator.

This focus enabled me to become the go-to sales skill coach for consultants, coaches, and agency owners.
My income skyrocketed.

Expert Insights
“The riches are in the niches, but only if you position yourself as the definitive problem solver for a specific audience.”
“A signature methodology is what separates experts from generalists in any market.”
“Your niche business positioning should make your solution feel indispensable to your ideal client.”
Is Your Business Positioning Working For You?
1. Can you describe what you do in one sentence that makes strangers say “I need that”?
If no, your positioning is too vague. A clear niche statement should trigger immediate recognition of the problem you solve.
2. Do your ideal clients find you, or do you chase them?
If you are chasing, your positioning is not strong enough. Tight positioning attracts inbound leads because people search for specific solutions, not generalists.
3. Can you charge 2x more than your competitors without losing deals?
If no, you are competing on price because you look interchangeable. Niche positioning creates perceived scarcity and expertise that justifies premium pricing.
4. Do you turn away clients who are not in your niche?
If no, you are a generalist pretending to be a specialist. True positioning means saying no to revenue that dilutes your brand.
5. Is your content marketing attracting the right audience consistently?
If no, your positioning is misaligned with your content. Every piece of content should reinforce your niche expertise and repel the wrong audience.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is niche business positioning?
Niche business positioning is the strategic process of defining a specific market segment you serve, the unique problem you solve, and the methodology you use to deliver results. It transforms you from a generalist competing on price into a specialist commanding premium rates.
Why should entrepreneurs avoid being generalists?
Generalists compete with everyone and stand out to no one. When you try to serve all markets, your messaging becomes generic, your expertise appears shallow, and prospects cannot distinguish you from cheaper alternatives. Niching down makes you the obvious choice for your target audience.
How do you create a signature methodology?
Start by documenting the repeatable process you use to deliver results for clients. Give it a unique name, break it into clear steps, and build your marketing around it. A signature methodology gives prospects confidence that you have a proven system, not just generic advice.
What makes a signature offer different from a regular service?
A signature offer is built around a specific outcome rather than a list of deliverables. Instead of selling hours or tasks, you sell the transformation your client experiences. This outcome-based framing justifies premium pricing and attracts clients who value results.
How do you promote your niche positioning effectively?
Consistency is key. Your positioning should be visible everywhere: your website, social media profiles, email signature, podcast appearances, and content marketing. Every touchpoint should reinforce that you are the go-to expert for your specific niche and problem.

The positioning test I run before any new niche bet
The episode above explains why positioning beats marketing budget for a solopreneur. Here is the test I run before I commit to a niche, which I did not record at the time.
Test one. Can I name three specific people who would pay for the offer right now. Not personas. Not avatars. Three real people, by name, with a phone number or an email address I already have. If I cannot name three, the positioning is too vague and I have not done enough listening. I go back to interviews before I touch a sales page.
Test two. Can I describe the problem in the words those three people actually used in conversation. Not my words. Theirs. I keep a notes file with verbatim quotes from every discovery call I have ever run. When I am testing a new positioning, I search that file for the keywords I want to use. If they do not appear, the language is mine, not the market’s. That is the difference between a page that converts and a page that gets bookmarked.
Test three. Would somebody in that niche refer me to another person in the same niche after one conversation. Referability is the cleanest signal in solopreneur work. If the answer is no, the offer is not specific enough. People only refer when the description fits a pattern they recognize in their own circle. Generic offers do not get referred. Specific ones get referred constantly.
I ran these three tests before I rebuilt my coaching offer in 2024. The previous version was ‘help solopreneurs grow’. Too broad. Nobody referred anyone. The new version is ‘help one-person operators install AI workflows that replace a $60,000 a year hire’. Specific. Bookable. Referred. The first six clients all came from referrals within the first three weeks. None of that happened with the broad version, despite a year of trying.
