TogglePeople Buy From Someone They Trust, Not From A Clever Sales Page
I spent an embarrassing amount of time polishing sales pages, tweaking headlines, testing buttons, hunting for the magic words that would make strangers buy. The pages that converted best were never my cleverest ones. They were the ones written for people who already trusted me before they landed there. Trust is built long before the pitch, in the free help you give, the promises you keep, and the times you tell someone not to buy. When that groundwork is done, the sales page barely has to work at all.
So stop trying to out-write your credibility gap and start closing it, because trust outsells copy every single time. Earn the belief first and the buying gets easy. I unpack the trust-building approach that changed my numbers on the Freedom by Choice podcast and in my Diary of a Virtual CEO newsletter. For the data, HubSpot research has benchmarks on how trust drives conversion, and Harvard Business Review has covered why buyer trust beats persuasion tactics.
Frequently Asked Questions
What builds trust faster than a good sales page?
Consistent free content over time. A sales page is a one-time interaction. A blog, podcast, or newsletter that delivers value every week builds familiarity and trust that no sales page can match. People buy from people they feel they already know.
How long does it take to build trust with an online audience?
Research shows it takes 5-7 touchpoints before someone trusts you enough to buy. At one touchpoint per week, that is about 2 months. You can accelerate this with daily content, case studies, and social proof from existing customers.
What is the most underrated trust signal?
Longevity. Simply being in business for years signals stability and reliability. A company that has operated for 20+ years (like Martin Ebongue Consulting, since 2004) carries inherent trust that no marketing tactic can replicate.
Do I need video to build trust online?
Video helps but is not required. Written case studies, podcast appearances, and detailed blog posts build trust equally well. The key is depth: shallow content builds awareness, deep content builds trust. Give away your best knowledge and people will pay for your implementation.
How do I get testimonials if I am just starting out?
Offer your product or service at a deep discount (or free) to 5-10 people in exchange for honest feedback. Document their results. Use those results as your first case studies. Every successful business started with a small group of early adopters.

Is Your Business Building Real Trust?
1. Do you have at least 10 customer testimonials visible on your sales pages?
If no, add them immediately. Testimonials are the single most persuasive element on any sales page. Even 3-5 real ones outperform any amount of copywriting.
2. Do you share your process before people buy?
If no, you are asking for a leap of faith. Show them exactly what happens after they buy. Transparency reduces purchase anxiety by 40-60%.
3. Can prospects find you through third-party mentions (podcasts, articles, reviews)?
If no, all your credibility is self-reported, which is the weakest form of trust. Get featured, get interviewed, get reviewed.
4. Do you follow up with buyers after the sale?
If no, you are missing the easiest trust-building opportunity. A post-purchase check-in turns buyers into advocates.
5. Have you been in your market for more than 2 years?
If yes, make that visible. Longevity is an underrated trust signal. “Helping entrepreneurs since 2004” says more than any sales pitch.
