TogglePositioning Decides Whether Selling Feels Easy Or Impossible
The same offer can feel like the easiest sale in the world or the hardest slog of your life, and the only thing that changed is how it was positioned. I have sold the exact same service to two markets and had one group treat me like the obvious choice while the other haggled over every dollar. That was not a skill problem, it was a positioning problem. When you position for the right person against the right alternative, half the objections vanish before you open your mouth. When you get it wrong, you fight for every inch.
So before you touch your pitch, fix who you are for and what you are the obvious answer to, because positioning does more heavy lifting than any script. Get it right and the customer arrives already half-sold. I break down how I found my positioning on the Freedom by Choice podcast and in my Diary of a Virtual CEO newsletter. For the data, HubSpot research has benchmarks on how positioning shapes buying decisions, and Harvard Business Review has covered why clear positioning drives durable growth.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is business positioning and why does it matter?
Positioning is how your target market perceives you relative to alternatives. It determines your pricing power, customer quality, and marketing effectiveness. Bad positioning forces you to compete on price. Good positioning lets customers come to you because nobody else does exactly what you do.
How do I find my positioning as a solopreneur?
Start with three questions: What do I do better than anyone else? Who specifically benefits most from this? What result do I deliver? Your positioning lives at the intersection of these three answers. The more specific, the more powerful.
Can I change my positioning after I have established it?
Yes, but do it gradually. A sudden pivot confuses your existing audience. Shift your messaging over 2-3 months, update your website, and align new content with the new position. Old content can stay as long as it does not contradict your new direction.
What is the biggest positioning mistake entrepreneurs make?
Trying to appeal to everyone. “I help businesses grow” is not positioning. “I help solopreneurs automate their marketing so they can run a business without employees” is positioning. The narrower you go, the easier it is to attract the right customers.
How do I know if my positioning is working?
Three signals: inbound leads mention your specific niche without you prompting them, you can charge above market rates without pushback, and competitors try to copy your messaging. If all three are happening, your positioning is strong.

Is Your Business Positioning Working?
1. Can someone describe what you do in one sentence?
If no, your positioning is unclear. Test it: ask 5 customers to describe your business. If you get 5 different answers, you have a positioning problem.
2. Do prospects compare you to competitors or see you as unique?
If they compare, you are competing on features and price. Good positioning makes comparisons irrelevant because you own a category.
3. Are you attracting your ideal customers or anyone with a pulse?
If “anyone,” your messaging is too broad. Narrowing your positioning feels scary but always increases conversion rates.
4. Can you charge premium prices without resistance?
If no, your positioning does not communicate enough value. People pay more when they see you as the only solution, not one of many options.
5. Has your positioning changed more than twice in the past year?
If yes, you are chasing instead of building. Pick a position and commit to it for at least 12 months before pivoting.
