Freedom Is A Choice: So choose wisely…
Welcome to the Freedom By Choice Podcast with your one and only hoste Martin. This podcast is reserved for freedom aficionados and entrepreneurs looking to create the lifestyle of their dreams.
In this podcast you will find all the support and answers you need to start, grow and scale a business that gives you the freedom you deserve.
I have compressed years of trials and errors, into easy to consume episodes, to take you from where you are now, to where you want to be.
Automation is a thing of beauty. So basically in this episode, I'm not necessarily going to tell you something very philosophical or something. I'm just going to tell you about something that I've been trying to do for a year.
And yesterday I was finally able to do it. So it took me. Yeah, it took me quite a while to do it. So that's why yesterday it was no episode because I was focused on finishing now and it's finally done.
I'm very, very happy. So in order to understand what I've been able to do, you just you need to understand automation. Right? So, I mean, if you're following this podcast, I guess you're interested in getting more time for yourself and getting businesses that work without you and for that, you need some automation.
OK, so the principle behind it is, is this is you know, there is some task that you will have to do in your business, OK? Because people some people misunderstand what the automation is and what businesses that will run without you are.
So the tasks in question, they're still there. They still have to be done for the business. And the first thing is identifying those tasks and the ones that are actually moving the needle.
And then once you have identified them, then you come up with some sort of workflow on how to do them. And then afterwards you try to automate that, OK. So why would you want to automate it?
So there are there a few reasons why you want to automate it. First of all, is your time, you know, because it doesn't look like much, but a task that will take you, I don't know, 10 minutes a day to do. At the end of the year. That's a lot of hours.
Thatโs time that you could have gotten for yourself to do other stuff. You don't know. Enjoy something else. I mean, we only have one life, you know, I don't know what you believe in, but I believe that I only have one life and I want to make the most of this life.
So if there are things I can avoid doing way too much, it's imperative that if I can get rid of it, if there is a way to do it, why would I do it manually?
So it doesn't matter how small the task is, you might think that is just two minutes. I could do it. Well, no, the best thing for you will be to figure out a way to do it for the last time.
So, for example, I have this podcast here. What happens once I upload this podcast? I've recorded this podcast on a recorder, then I will upload it online. OK, so what happens after that?
How to automate your way to happiness
These are things that I used to do before and these are things that you probably do if you have your own podcast or if you're creating content or something. Right.
Once you have uploaded that, then you need to go and syndicate it to other platforms. You're taking it and redoing the same thing again, which I don't want to do.
And then afterwards, once the podcast is on, then in the in the past, I would have had to go to my blog and then create a post, take the subject line, you know, off of the podcast to the link of the podcast and that kind of stuff.
So I automated that. So now it's fully automated. I don't have to go and create the actual post on my website. So my automation's are going to pick up everything I need from the podcast or the subject line. So, you know, creating a post, it might not seem like much. I mean, for me, I am not the best at WordPress and stuff.
What happens is the now that the blog post is created, I have an automation that will take the blog. The blog post will take all the details, the URL, the subject and everything. And it's going to put it in a spreadsheet for me, a Google Docs.
So I have the list of all the posts that I've done with the date, the subject and all that kind of stuff, the link. So if I ever need to find an episode or whatever, I can just go there.
OK, so again, that would have taken me maybe five minutes to go and copy all the details and fill that form. I don't have to do it. So I just saved a good thirty minutes already by creating my post and then listing that stuff on a spreadsheet.
OK then from there it's still not finished. From there it's going to take the post and it is going to connect to my email tool and it's going to create an email for me and send it to the list that I predefine. And it's going to create the whole content, the subject line and all that kind of stuff. It's never the same. And this will have taken me another ten minutes, ten, fifteen minutes.
Right now we're at like forty five minutes, maybe forty five minutes. And then afterward it's going to take the post and it is going to connect to my LinkedIn and it's going to create a post over there, select a random image around the subject line and put it over there. OK, so that would have been another five minutes.
So just imagine if every single day, just by creating a post like this, you know, doing my podcast, it would have taken me another hour roughly to do all these things. And I do a podcast every day. So every single month I will save 30 hours on just this one task. And at the end of the year then it is three hundred and sixty hours, maybe 12 days or something. At the end of the year I have saved 12 days!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you really automate your way to happiness?
Yes, in the sense that automating the parts of life and business that drain you frees the time and emotional bandwidth that happiness actually depends on. Automation does not generate joy directly but it removes the constant low-level frustration of repetitive work, which is what most people mistake for unhappiness.
What should I automate first in my business and life?
Automate the three things you do most often that produce no satisfaction: invoicing, email follow ups, and scheduling. These three eat 5 to 10 hours per week for most solopreneurs. Recovering that time delivers an immediate quality of life upgrade and creates space for higher value work.
How long does it take to set up business automation?
Most basic automations take 2 to 6 hours to set up with tools like Zapier, Make, or n8n. Recurring weekly tasks pay back the setup time within 30 days. Once set up, automations run for years with minimal maintenance, which is why the time return on automation is dramatically better than most other productivity work.
Will automation make me lazy or unmotivated?
Automation does the opposite for most people. Removing repetitive low-value work raises motivation because each remaining hour now produces something meaningful. The risk is not laziness but boredom from over-automation, which is solved by intentionally choosing one or two manual rituals that reconnect you with the craft of the work.

What automate your way to happiness really means to me
Let me be honest about the title, because it can sound like a gimmick. Automation did not make me happy by itself. It made me happy by removing the work I hated so I had room for the work I love. That is the whole trick. I did not automate to do more. I automated to do less of the wrong things. The dashboard was never the point. The freed-up Tuesday afternoon was.
So when you build your first automation, do not start with what looks impressive. Start with what drains you. The task you dread on Monday is the one worth handing to a machine. I show the exact systems I use to buy back my week in my growth hacking videos, and I go deeper on the operational side in my LinkedIn newsletter. If you want to build these yourself, the Zapier blog is a friendly place to start, and the n8n blog is where I go for self-hosted workflows that keep running after the free trial ends.
