I wanted to answer a question that I get a lot from people, you know, when I meet people and tell them what I do, they obviously want some advice from me as to as to what they can do and all that kind of stuff.

And very often, you know, I'm asked, oh, but what should I learn then? Can you recommend me something I should learn and in which direction to go?

OK, so obviously the answer will depend on the person. There are some proven business models out there and they can decide whether it is for them or not.

So, for example, the reason why I say depends is because if I tell you all well, you should go and do some drop shipping. But if the last thing you want to do is having to deal with clients and handling support calls then it's obviously not for you, you know what I mean?

And if you want to be a little bit more laid back, I might send you through to affiliation. If you are maybe a person who wants to have more control over every possible detail of everything, you should go and create your own product. So that's the reason why it depends.

OK, but when I'm asked this question about, oh, well, what should I study and stuff, you know, what should I pay attention to? When you're asking this question today, given all the technology and everything we have today, this is actually not the right question to ask.

So we live in a world today where you have access to Internet, you have access to like pretty much everything on the Internet. You can have everything that's ever been written or created or any image, any painting or something that has been painted. You can have it, you know, at your disposal. You can see it with a few clicks.

You don't have to leave your house. OK, so here's the problem. I think the biggest challenge today, given everything we have, is not actually what you should learn, but it is actually what you should ignore, OK, because you are bombarded by different ways of doing things.

Oh, do this, do that. Some people do drop shipping. Some people do YouTube, some people do Facebook, some people do Instagram and you're basically constantly pulled in every direction. So it makes it really, really hard for anybody to focus.

So one of the advantages that this technology has brought is that you have access to a lot of information, right? Everything you want to access, and then you do have access to it. But one of the drawbacks of this is that you might actually have way too much information and you need to be able to filter that information.

Like honestly, you need to learn what to ignore because otherwise you're going to be pulled in every possible direction. And most of them are like dead ends. Right, because there is actually nothing there, you know.

Direct response copywriting. The ability to write words that convert readers into buyers protects you when ads get expensive, when platforms shift, and when budgets tighten. Solopreneurs who can write a sales page or email sequence have an asset that earns in any economy. Without it, every traffic dollar leaks.

How long does it take to get good at copywriting?

Six to twelve months of deliberate practice. Read 5 classic copywriting books, hand-copy 50 winning sales letters, and write 100 of your own pieces. By month 12 you produce work that converts. There is no shortcut, but the return is high because the skill compounds across email, ads, video scripts, and pages.

Should a solopreneur hire a copywriter instead of learning the skill?

Eventually yes, but not first. Hiring out before you can spot good copy means you pay 2,000 dollars for work that does not convert and you cannot fix. Learn the basics first so you can brief, edit, and audit. Then hire to scale. This sequence protects budget and avoids dependency on outside vendors.

What is the first copywriting skill to master?

Headlines. A headline is the gatekeeper for everything that follows. Solopreneurs who only improve headlines see double-digit conversion gains in a quarter. Master five headline formulas, A/B test them weekly, and watch the rest of your funnel respond. Everything else in copy is downstream of the headline.
