I have compressed years of trials and errors, into easy to consume episodes, to take you from where you are now, to where you want to be.
There was this experiment that was done with three year olds. They put the three year old in a room with this guy and the guy will drop a marshmallow on the plate and he will leave the room and he will tell the kid, If when I come back, the marshmallow is still here, then you will be rewarded with three marshmallows, OK?
And so the guy leaves the room so you can see the kids struggle because they want the marshmallows. And you can see the kids are like, ah, you know, like holding their heads and stuff and they're impatient. And the guy leaves for like a good 15 minutes or something, you know.
So what happened was that I don't know, maybe like 50 percent of the kids, they waited, even though it was hard. They waited. And they do get the three marshmallows whereas the other ones. Don't get the marshmallows. They already ate the marshmallow that they had.
They actually wanted to correlate that with people's life then afterwards down the road. So what they did was that was a very long experiment. They found all these kids after 17 years. So 17 years later, when the kids were 20, they looked at their lives. So they looked at, you know, academics, number of friends, I don't know, like happiness and grades and like wealth.
And they realized that without a shadow of a doubt, like without exception, the kids that actually paced themselves and didn't eat the marshmallows were doing better. It is quite interesting, like, you know, for me, the most interesting part about it is that they waited 17 years to complete the experiment.
It's crazy, right? But what does that tell you? The behaviour that they demonstrated there had a long term impact on their life. So what was the lesson that you can get from there?
This fatal mistake followed them for the rest of their lives
Some of these kids realized that by doing something unpleasant now, and then you get rewarded with something like a bigger reward than the easy solution that's here. OK, so obviously these were kids. They were not going to formulate an answer that was super elaborate.
But they did understand that. Well, if it sucks a little bit now, then itโs going to be 100 times better. The fruits that I'm going to collect afterwards are going to be 100 times better.
So these kids, for example, they will end up understanding the importance of investing in yourself. They didn't realize that, but it was exactly the same situation. Do I go with the easy route right now? I get that marshmallow and yeah, that's pretty much it. I'm screwed. Or do I take the time and I play the long game?
And I understand that this investment, this unpleasant investment that I'm making now is going to pay dividends for a long time.
So at the time they were kids. So, you know, you can say it's just marshmallows. No, it's not just marshmallows but it is a symptomatic of how these kids will actually live their lives afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is one fatal solopreneur mistake that follows people for years?
Building on a rented audience without ever moving people to owned channels. Solopreneurs who spend 3 years on one platform and never collect emails wake up to algorithm changes that wipe revenue overnight. The fix is simple but unglamorous: lead every piece of content to a list signup.
How do you recover from this mistake?
Start collecting emails today, even if traffic is small. Add a single high-value lead magnet to every piece of content. Run the play for 6 months. By month 12 you have a real list. The recovery is slower than the avoidance, but it is fully achievable. No solopreneur is too late to start.
Why do so many beginners ignore this advice?
Because vanity metrics on social platforms feel like progress. Followers, likes, and views give dopamine. Email subscribers feel boring by comparison. The reality is that 1,000 emails outperform 100,000 social followers for a typical solopreneur in revenue terms. Boring assets win the long game.
Are there other fatal mistakes solopreneurs should avoid?
Three more: treating discovery calls as the product instead of a step, pricing based on hours instead of value, and skipping financial discipline until tax season. Each can take years to recover from. Solopreneurs who avoid all four early build durable businesses faster than peers who have to unlearn them later.
