This could cause your downfall if you are not careful.
Complacency is the silent killer of entrepreneurial success. The moment you stop being hungry for growth, you start sliding backwards. In this episode of the Freedom By Choice podcast, I share a real story of someone who came to Bali to build an online business but fell off track twice, and the lesson it teaches about why “staying hungry” is not just a motivational quote.

Answers in today's episode.
So today you wanted to talk to you about something you might have seen in your motivational quotes and stuff like that. You know, when they asked people, what's there a recipe for success? You know, it's always โwork hardโ and stuff. But there is very often a component which is โstay hungryโ.
It doesn't seem that important or anything. And it just seems like something people say, yeah, just stay hungry. And, you know, it's actually very, very important to stay hungry.
So I know this guy here whoโs working online. OK. So he came last year to work online and everything. But he arrived in Bali. And he basically didn't do much, except partying.
So he came with an objective in mind. But here it's very easy to get distracted. All right. So the first time he was here he was partying. He was going to the beach and all that stuff. So nothing actually worked for him. Yeah. So he didnโt reach the goals and objectives that he set for himself. And then I think he left. He went somewhere else and stuff. And then he came back here. Right.
So he came back. But this time he was more focused. He was working in a team with people who had experience, who could show him the ropes and everything. And this is when everything started clicking for him. It started working really well, and he started making money and everything.

This could cause your downfall if you are not careful.
So you need to surround yourself with the right people. You know, you can be strong. Can you say strong minded or weak minded? But if everybody around you is always playing video games and drinking and partying and all that stuff and not doing anything constructive, business wise, if you're in that kind of environment, it is very hard for you not to. If you meet the right people that stimulate your mind, they keep you motivated as well.
Also don't get too detached from whatever it is that you're doing because, you know, it is very, very quick to go from top to bottom. It's very quick. So you need to then find the motivation to get back up. Okay. Which is, you know, something like a little bit different. You have to get over your ego and your disappointment and all that stuff. So that's the first challenge.
You have to stay hungry. You need that. You owe it to yourself because, again, things can change very, very quickly. You know something? Some regulation changes somewhere. And your Facebook ads or whatever gets shut down or whatever.
Key Insight: Staying hungry is not just a motivational cliche. It is a survival mechanism for entrepreneurs. The moment you get comfortable and stop pushing, your competition passes you, your skills get dull, and your momentum disappears faster than you built it.
Key Insight: Your environment determines your output. If you surround yourself with people who party and procrastinate, you will party and procrastinate. If you surround yourself with focused, experienced people, you will rise to their level. Choose your environment before you choose your goals.
If you're using Facebook and stuff, it's very, very quick. Okay. And if you don't stay hungry and you're not always, you know, improving stuff and creating other income streams and stuff and keeping up to date with whatever it is that you're doing, then you can very, very well end up at the bottom very, very quickly. Okay. So it's just a new piece of advice.
And speaking from experience, I know how devastating this can be for you and the people around you. Going to the beach and going to parties is great, but everything in moderation is the way to go. Stay focussed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does “stay hungry” actually mean for entrepreneurs?
Staying hungry means maintaining the same level of urgency and drive you had when you first started, even after you begin seeing success. It means never treating any achievement as a reason to coast. The most successful entrepreneurs treat every day as day one.
How do I stay motivated when I get comfortable?
Set new, bigger goals before you finish your current ones. Surround yourself with people who are further ahead than you. Comfort becomes dangerous when you have nothing left to chase, so always keep a target in front of you.
Why do so many entrepreneurs fail after initial success?
Initial success creates a false sense of security. People start spending more time celebrating than working, their daily habits slip, and by the time they notice the decline, they have lost the momentum that took months to build. The antidote is consistent discipline regardless of results.
