How to balance your relationship and your passion.

Today I want to talk about something personal… This is something I have gone through right now and will probably face in the future. HOWEVER, the same applies to you if you are passionate about something.

This is a very important podcast to give you some pointers about what NOT to do in order to maintain good relationships with people around you (and not end up sleeping in the doghouse if the girlfriend is mad at you, hehe).

It's actually very personal and it's something that you might come across if you're like me, if you're working by yourself, if you're an entrepreneur and if you are doing a lot of things online. Recently I had this kind of like major fight with the girlfriend.

If you're in a relationship with someone who's not as passionate as you are in something, then it could cause some friction because, you know, the other person doesn't understand why you spend so much time and energy doing something when it seems like you're not doing anything right. And this is a common problem, which is not only my problem, but it happens a lot.

And one of these things that I was told is that while I'm present. You know, sometimes I can be there physically, but I'm just not there. Like mentally present in the moment. So I'm not talking about the yoga thing and meditation stuff where you need to learn how to be in the moment.

I'm not talking about this. I'm just saying that sometimes, you know. But basically, we should spend more time together and all this stuff. And I was like, yeah, no problem. So I decided that to put whatever I was doing on hold. And we went and we did something right.

But even when I was there, I may have been thinking about something else. Not necessarily on my phone, but somewhere, you know, deep in my mind and stuff. You know, like thinking about my next move and everything. And this is something that can happen. And I think it happens, too.

I mean, if you're an entrepreneur, if you're creating stuff, if you're starting your own businesses and stuff and you're like a one man army or one woman army, then you know what I'm talking about.

Because it's a passion. It doesn't stop, right? ย I've created the life that perfect for me, a life where, you know, I've been travelling for a while for a few years. I was traveling by myself, because it was easier for me to travel by myself.

And actually it becomes easier for me to be by myself than to be with other people. I have this habit of thinking about stuff by myself, you know, and not having to talk and strategize stuff and it becomes a like a reflex. You know, I don't actually think about it, you know.

And that becomes a problem afterwards when, you know, when you're with someone and you are there physically, but you're not there mentally because you're doing what you're supposed to do, what you've been trained to do and what you do every day without actually realizing it.

o after, you know the argument that was maybe like, a week ago? And it's just like a few days later that I processed the information because I always like to process the information. So I started thinking about what was said at the moment. And that was like, you know what? It's true. You know, it is true.

At the time, I was a kid again. And I never actually seriously considered how bad it will feel for someone else. You know, it's again, a reflex. So that's something I decided to work on so that, you know, when we do stuff together in the future, I will think more about us and not about work.

I do understand now what she meant. Right. So this is something that you guys, if you're like an entrepreneur, if you're thinking of becoming an entrepreneur and having your own business and all that stuff is something that you may be confronted with.

And this is why I said the entrepreneurship journey can be quite tricky because again, if you don't find someone who is as crazy and as obsessed as you about something, it will be very hard for that person to understand that and it will cause a lot of like frictions and unnecessary arguments and stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you balance a serious relationship with a serious passion or business?

Balance comes from explicit time blocks rather than implicit hopes. Your partner needs scheduled, screen free attention. Your passion needs scheduled, distraction free work. The conflict starts when both compete for the same uncommitted hours. Block both on the calendar and most of the daily friction disappears.

What are the warning signs that your passion is hurting your relationship?

Three warning signs: your partner stops asking about your work, you start hiding hours spent on it, and arguments shift from content to tone. Each is a quiet alarm that the relationship is paying the cost of your passion without your awareness. Listen early, not after the damage.

Can your partner support a passion they do not personally share?

Yes, when the partner sees a clear horizon, a clear benefit to the family, and a clear ceiling on how much weekly time the passion eats. Without those three, support fades into tolerance, and tolerance fades into resentment. Define them out loud, not in your head.

What boundaries protect both your relationship and your passion long term?

Use three boundaries: a weekly date that is non negotiable, a daily window without work mentioned, and a quarterly review where the relationship gets the same audit you give the business. These three protect both sides because both sides know they have time reserved that no project can take.
