This is so powerful that it gets you to do things you wouldn't normally do if you knew which trigger is being used against you.

It's time to find out and all the answers are in today's episode.

There are six basic fears, like the worst fears ever. And there is one that marketing strategists are actually using. And this is the one that's actually driving a lot of your decisions. And it's based on the fear of criticism. We already talked about this before.

So you are way too worried about what other people will think and what you will look like if Bob has an iPhone 10 and you have an iPhone eight. All right. Because in essence, the iPhone eight does everything you need it to do. You don't need iPhone ten. The only reason why you need iPhone 10 is because everybody is going to go and buy the iPhone ten, just because it's out.

And then you might be in the situation where people are like, oh, man, look at him, he has the iPho

Fear of criticism is the most exploited psychological trigger in marketing because it operates below conscious awareness. Once you recognize it, you become significantly harder to manipulate.

Marketers use the fear of being judged, laughed at, or left behind to manufacture urgency that has nothing to do with the product's actual value. Awareness is the antidote.

Your six basic fears are not weaknesses. They are universal human responses. Knowing which ones are being activated in a buying decision gives you back the power to choose rationally.

ne eight and stuff. And you don't want that. You don't want people to criticize you and you don't want to look like an old dinosaur or something. In this day and age, everybody has smartphones and stuff like that.

But here in Indonesia, you go to places and people still have these really old phones. You know no Internet, no nothing on it. You just text people you call and some people are making fun of them. They're like, oh, look at this phone and stuff. And I'm like, Dude, well, is this old person, because itโ€™s usually like grandads and stuff.

Do you think they need to go on Facebook and Instagram and whatever? No, they don't. So this phone works for whatever they need to do, right? They don't need more. So you don't actually need to compare yourself with other people. Right. Just you need to figure out what do you need the phone for?

And you just get the phone that gets the job done. You don't need to have the latest one and spend twelve hundred dollars for a phone.

So you have to understand this, that marketing that gets you to buy the latest stuff and gets you to buy the, you know, the trends and the latest fashion and stuff, is based on the fear of criticism, which is one of our six biggest fears. We're social creatures as people say. And you want to blend in. Right. And for some people, it's actually a big problem, you know.

Here are some of the things that you might actually get exposed to and what will happen to you. So the first thing, as I said, is you will become part of the masses. Because you're just doing what everybody does.

There is no logical reason, no good reason for you to go and buy the latest iPhone when you don't actually need it. The only thing you do is connect to WhatsApp and Facebook. You don't need that. You can you can have a phone that's six years old that will do it.

The mass is always wrong. The mass is the average. It's the average by definition. People who have exceptional results are not the masses. It's a minority. Right. So you don't want to be part of the masses. The masses is just doing average stuff. And you just look like everybody and you donโ€™t want to look like everybody.

One of your 6 biggest fears… and how it's being used against you

Just because everybody is getting their phone is popular. You want it. OK. So I'm not saying don't go and get the latest phone. Go and get the latest phone. If it actually makes sense for you, if this phone has something that's actually helping you, you know, achieve whatever goal it is that you're that you're doing.

And it just drives me insane to see people who follow trends and fashion and stuff. You're just doing what everybody else is doing. You're not thinking for yourself saying, well, you know what? This is what I like. I don't really care what other people doing. Let me do what I want to do. No, you just you just doing what everybody else is doing, you know?

This is how people go broke because they don't want to be criticized. They want people to idolize them. And they spend way beyond their limits. OK, so that's one thing you don't want. If you're smart, that's the thing. If you're really smart and if you know who you are, you just do the things you like and you'll see that, well, you're going to spend far less money.

The fear that gets used against you, and how I stopped falling for it

You are being sold to through your fears, and most of it works because you never named them. I spent 20+ years in marketing automation, and I can tell you the sharpest campaigns do not sell a product. They poke a fear and offer relief. Fear of missing out. Fear of being left behind. Fear of looking foolish. Once I could see the mechanism, I stopped being the target and started being the operator. That is not cynicism. It is literacy. When you know which of your six big fears a message is aiming at, you get to choose instead of react, and that one habit has saved me more bad decisions than any budget ever did. I dug into this on the Freedom by Choice podcast and wrote the longer version on my Substack. The research is honest about it too: Harvard Business Review on how emotion drives buying, and Gartner on the psychology behind marketing tech. Name the fear a message is using. Then decide on the facts. The people who see the hook are the ones who stop getting caught by it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the six basic fears that marketers exploit?

Napoleon Hill identified six basic fears: poverty, criticism, ill health, loss of love, old age, and death. Of these, the fear of criticism is the one most consistently weaponized in marketing to create social pressure and urgency.

How does fear of criticism affect buying decisions?

It creates the feeling that not buying makes you appear behind, uninformed, or less successful than your peers. Marketers use social proof, exclusivity claims, and fear of missing out to amplify this response and shorten the evaluation window.

How can you make better purchasing decisions despite emotional triggers?

Create a 48-hour waiting rule for non-essential purchases. Ask yourself: would I still want this if no one else knew I bought it? This separates genuine value from social validation purchases.

Are fear-based marketing tactics effective?

Extremely, in the short term. They generate fast conversions. But they also generate high refund rates, buyer's remorse, and low customer lifetime value, which is why businesses built on authentic value ultimately outperform those built on psychological manipulation.
