| Advice Source | Why Entrepreneurs Listen | Why It Often Fails |
|---|---|---|
| Online Gurus | Polished branding, big promises | Most sell courses, not results from doing |
| Motivational Speakers | Emotional highs, inspiring stories | No tactical execution plan for your context |
| Peers at Same Level | Relatable, easy access | Blind leading the blind with untested ideas |
| Operators Who Built | Real track record, specific tactics | Their context may not match yours exactly |
| Your Own Experience | Most relevant data you have | Confirmation bias if not tested against data |

Only those who walk the walk should be allowed to talk. , Martin Ebonguรฉ [11:34]

ToggleIs Your Advice Filter Working For You?
1. Do you verify whether the person giving you advice has actually done what they teach?
If no: Before following any business advice, check for verifiable results. Revenue screenshots, client testimonials, and public track records matter more than follower counts.
2. Have you spent more than $500 on courses or coaching in the last year with zero ROI?
If yes: Stop buying information. Start implementing what you already know. Execution beats education 100% of the time.
3. Do you change your strategy every time you hear a new guru's opinion?
If yes: Pick one proven path and commit for 90 days minimum. Strategy hopping is why most entrepreneurs never gain traction.
4. Can you name 3 specific, measurable results from the last advice you followed?
If no: You are consuming content, not implementing systems. Advice without action is entertainment.
5. Do you have a trusted inner circle of 2-3 people who challenge your thinking?
If no: Build one. The right mentor or accountability partner is worth more than 100 online courses.
Action Steps You Can Take Right Now:
1. Before taking anyone's advice or investing your money, always ask them if they have skin in the game themselves. If they don't, proceed with caution. [01:18]
2. When looking for a Facebook ads agency, only work with those that actively run their own ads. This shows they have confidence in their strategies and aren't just gambling with your money. [02:24]
3. If you're considering a business partnership, ensure that your potential partner is willing to invest their own money and resources into the venture. This demonstrates their commitment and shared risk. [10:05]
4. In your own entrepreneurial journey, focus on talking about and pursuing opportunities where you have personal experience and are willing to put your own skin in the game. [14:02]

Advice Is A Starting Point, Not An Instruction
The most successful people I know are strangely allergic to guru advice, and for a long time that confused me. Then I understood it. Advice is always shaped by the situation of the person giving it, their market, their moment, their luck, none of which match yours exactly. I burned real time and money doing exactly what confident experts told me to do, only to learn it worked for them and not for me. Good advice points a direction, it does not hand you a map to your own terrain.
So take advice as a hypothesis to test, not a command to obey, run the small experiment in your own business, and let your results overrule anyone's opinion, including mine. The person closest to your actual data should get the final vote. I talk about why I test everything before I trust it on the Freedom by Choice podcast and in my own story. For the research, Harvard Business Review has covered how evidence based decisions beat received wisdom, and McKinsey has studied how leaders separate real signal from noise.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I tell the difference between a real mentor and a fake guru?
Real mentors have verifiable results in the exact field they teach. They show their work, not just their income. Martin spent $38,000+ on mentorship and learned that the best mentors ask more questions than they give answers. A guru sells you a dream; a mentor builds your skills.
Should I stop consuming business content entirely?
No, but shift from passive consumption to active filtering. For every piece of advice, ask: Has this person done what they are teaching? Does it apply to my specific situation? Can I test it in 7 days? If any answer is no, move on. This filter alone saves hundreds of wasted hours per year.
Why do successful entrepreneurs ignore most advice they receive?
Because context is everything. What works for a funded startup with 50 employees will destroy a solopreneur with zero budget. Successful entrepreneurs filter advice through their own data: their market, their margins, their capacity. They take what fits and discard the rest.
How much should I invest in business coaching or mentorship?
Only invest what you can afford to lose, and only after you have validated the mentor's track record. A $500 mentorship with a proven operator will outperform a $10,000 course from someone who makes money selling courses. Martin's rule: never pay for advice from someone who has not built what you want to build.
What is the best way to learn business if not from gurus?
Build, measure, learn. Launch something small, track what happens, and adjust. Your own data from a $100 experiment teaches more than any $2,000 course. Supplement with books from actual operators (not influencers) and conversations with people 2-3 steps ahead of you.
