Business Advice Red Flags vs Green Flags
| Signal | Red Flag (Avoid) | Green Flag (Follow) | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Source | Never built a business | Has verifiable results | Theory vs practice |
| Specificity | Vague motivational talk | Exact steps and numbers | Actionable vs inspirational |
| Cost | Requires huge upfront investment | Low-risk ways to test first | Risk management |

| Scalability | Depends on your daily labor | Builds systems that run alone | Long-term freedom |
| Proof | Screenshots with no context | Verifiable public track record | Trust verification |
Word Of Wisdom:
The truth and the actual data are actually on the field.
It's not on the paper.
You do need a plan because otherwise you're going nowhere.
Are You Following the Right Business Advice?
Have you paid for coaching from someone without a public track record?
If yes, you may be funding their income stream, not your education.
Do you change strategy every time you consume new content?
If yes, you have “shiny object syndrome” and need to commit to one path for 90 days.
Are you implementing advice from people at your revenue level or above?
If no, you are taking directions from people who have not walked your desired path.
Can you name the specific results your current mentor has achieved?
If no, you are following charisma instead of competence.
Have you validated business advice with a small test before going all-in?
If no, you are gambling instead of experimenting. Always test with minimum viable effort first.
But do not think that whatever you have on that paper, on the board or on a diagram or something, that this is set in stone and this is going to happen because most of the time it is not. [05:28]
Action Steps You Can Take Right Now:
1. Simplify your plan to avoid getting overwhelmed and stuck in the planning phase [01:15]
2. Embrace the mindset that your plan is a hypothesis, not a certainty, and be willing to adapt as you gather new information [09:31]
3. Take action quickly and cost-effectively, focusing on gathering data and validating or invalidating your assumptions [06:49]
By implementing these strategies, you'll be well on your way to overcoming analysis paralysis and making significant progress in your business.
Remember, success lies in taking action, not in crafting the perfect plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you know if business advice is good or bad?
Good business advice comes with specific numbers, timelines, and verifiable results. Bad advice is vague, overpromises, and cannot be traced back to real outcomes. Martin evaluates every piece of advice against one filter: “Did this person build what I want to build?” If the answer is no, the advice gets ignored regardless of how popular the source is.
Why does most business advice fail?
Most business advice fails because it is generic. A strategy that works for a funded startup does not work for a solopreneur with zero budget. Context matters more than content. The advice that destroyed businesses in Martin's experience was always advice that ignored the listener's specific situation.
Should you pay for business coaching?
Only if the coach has built and currently runs a business in your industry. The coaching industry is worth $15 billion, and an estimated 80% of coaches have never built a profitable business themselves. Verify results before paying.
How do you filter business advice on social media?
Three-step filter: (1) Check if the person has a real business, not just a personal brand selling courses. (2) Look for specific case studies with numbers. (3) Test one piece of their free advice for 30 days before buying anything.
What is the biggest advice mistake entrepreneurs make?
Taking advice from too many sources simultaneously. The average entrepreneur follows 5-10 influencers and tries to implement conflicting strategies. Pick one proven framework, commit for 90 days, measure results, then decide.

The Most Dangerous Advice Is The Advice That Worked For Someone Else
Some advice does not just fail you, it actively takes your business down, and the scary part is that it usually sounds smart. It is dangerous precisely because it worked spectacularly for the confident person saying it, in their market, at their moment, with their resources, none of which are yours. I followed a few of these gospel truths early on and watched them quietly wreck things that were working, because I applied someone else's answer to my very different question. Advice that is right for one context can be poison in another.
So run every piece of advice through your own situation before you trust it, especially the advice everyone repeats as obvious, because the more universal a rule sounds the more likely it is hiding a context you do not share. Test it small, keep what survives your reality. I talk about the popular advice that nearly cost me everything on the Freedom by Choice podcast and in my own story. For the research, Harvard Business Review has covered why best practices fail out of context, and McKinsey has studied how blindly copied playbooks backfire.
